Two Meetings in One

Greetings from Capt. Don here in sunny South Palm Beach, Florida. Thanks to Jim Lowell and Dan Dalquist I am able to upload two meetings. One was a report from the Visioning Conference and the other is from our regular meeting.

Visioning Project, February 20, 2011

Attendance = 18

Our facilitators were from the Houghton Rotary Club: Bill Mussleman, Eldon Johnson and Bob Sharkey. Our own Rich Schaefer coordinated the event.

We were asked a question: What is Rotary? Our answers included Service, Fun, Fellowship, and “What ever you want it to be”. This was followed by explaining our Club was to think 5 yrs ahead. We use the process to define goals that will be built by consensus.

Rotary International expects each Club to improve it’s Continuity of Leadership by providing long term goals for each Club Pres to work towards, improve our consistency of programming and to build by solidarity in purpose. We were asked to be bold, suspend our practical side, think outside the box, dream big, and leave our individual baggage outside the room.

A description of our Club Board committees could include Administration, Public Relations, Membership, Service Projects and Foundation.

The visioning process started with each Rotarian transporting themselves to the year 2016. Our instructions were to write a description of the CLK Club’s activities and membership; as if our club was receiving a prestigious international award. We had 10 categories to complete and 30 minutes to write our ideas.

Each of the 10 items was discussed and ideas collected from the group and written on flip-charts. Ideas came from every one!

Each Rotarian was given 29 Blue dots. Once all the ideas were documented on the flip charts, we placed the blue dots by the ideas each felt were the best in that category. When the first round was completed, our facilitators kept the top 3 ideas for each category and deleted the rest. We voted a second time with red dots. Once that round was completed, the surviving ideas became our goals. I did not have time or opportunity to write them down so they will be reported at a future date.

At this point, we appointed a Club Vision Coordinator whose task is to compile the charts and prepare to present to the Club. That person is Rich Schaefer. We also appointed a committee of 3 to prepare a vision statement or “elevator speech” for our Club based upon the information gathered tonight.

Our next steps are to have a meeting to present the information to the club (within 6 weeks or sooner). President Tim needs to assemble a President’s Development committee (consisting of several Past Presidents and the current President) to meet and coordinate the Planning. We also need to identify a club Visioning Champion.

All the above steps are designed to continue the Visioning process and use the data to further develop our Club.

I thought the event was well done. Eldon, Bob and Bill did a good job keeping us on track. The ideas and thoughts were good. Comments were supportive and creative. And..we had fun.

February 23 Regular Meeting:

Attendance: 15 members, no guests.

Tim Baroni presided over happy dollars and announcements, including the Reverend Peter’s announcement that his son and daughter-in-law have given birth to a son, presumably a future champion cyclist and cross country skier.

Tim then conducted some business including thanking all those who participated in the Visioning exercise last week and the announcement that the Visioning process will move into the analysis and organization phase with results to be brought to the Club for consideration.

In addition Tim discussed the upcoming spaghetti dinner (March 11), announcing that all club members will be responsible for (and will be billed for) 8 tickets. Tickets were distributed for member sale. The spaghetti dinner fund-raiser will be at Irish Times from 4pm to 8pm. All members are expected to be there to help and to also contribute a dessert to the meal.

The program was by Kevin Store who talked about The “Perfect Storm” of physician recruitment. He noted that recruitment of medical professionals into the area has a bit effect on the quality of our medical institutions and the local economy. He also described the health care professionals as in short supply due to training bottlenecks – specifically residency programs.

The Perfect Storm is caused by 3 items: Retiring physicians, the residency bottleneck and an increasing patient load, leading to a shortage of professionals. Current needs at Portage Health are in the areas of Orthopedic surgery, OB/GYN, Family Medicine and Internal Medicine. It did not appear that Kevin was successful in recruiting any of the attendees into any of these areas.

Regular Meeting, January 26, 2011

No Phil today. We did have two wayward Rotarians return – Andy Murtagh and Jim Lowry! Welcome Back! Also no pictures because my camera attachment is back in Copper Harbor on my desk.,

A variety of Happy dollars & announcements: Capt don Kilpela paid his $3 to announce he was leaving for 3 months. Pastor Peter paid $1 to announce there were no Canadian Teams in the Super Bowl.

Program: Jim Lowell gave an interesting presentation on the game of darts. He described the dartboard components. The main body is sisal fibers assembled on end to permit easy return of the fibers once a dart is removed. The rings are removable to permit the board to be rotated when certain areas are worn.

Dart boards run $30-$60 with a set of darts priced at $40. Jim’s darts were 90% tungsten which is 2X heavier than brass. They weighed 26 grams. Darts weigh between 20 and 50 grams. Players can buy the weight that works best for them. The tungsten darts are also thinner than the brass. Thinner dart barrels permit closer groupings yielding higher scores.

Jim explained three dart games: 301, 501 and cricket. I cannot go into detail on the rules and strategy other than to suggest Rotarians call Jim and set up a game date. You will need to supply the appropriate beveridge.

Jim stated he enjoys the game and the mental math. Players need to be working to determine what scores they need to bring the score down ( that’s right – down) to zero.

President Eldon Johnson – Houghton Rotary club thanked our club for participating in the CHOICES program. The local Rotary Clubs have provided CHOICES training to over 1000 students! Eldon announced the CHOICES program will be modified somewhat for the next year including gaining support from Bill Gates.

Tim Baroni asked the Club for happy Dollars – a few were collected. Not many announcements this week!

Program: Scott See introduced Meg Pachmayer from WUPPDR. Meg is a planner who has been working on the US 41 Scenic Byway project. This is a project centered upon US 41 from Hancock to Copper Harbor as a Scenic Byway. The project has been defined to include the entire Keweenaw Peninsula.

Partner groups include Houghton and Keweenaw Counties, the Keweenaw Historical County Society, MDOT, the Keweenaw National Historical Park, and others.

The Commission is working to provide common marketing through Website with logo, a 5 year master plan, signage, viewing areas and determined methods of financing improvements. For example: Brockway Mountain Drive has been identified as an area that needs work improving the overlooks area, pullouts on the road for viewing, repairs to the rock walls, interpretive signs, and land acquisition.

The designation as an American Byway includes the Keweenaw in national advertising (only 150 sites in the US have this designation). The hope is more people will come to visit and explore by car, motorcycle, and bicycle.

Business Meeting, January 5, 2011

Members present totaled 17 and included the captain who was not pictured.

The festivities got underway with a lusty rendition of "Happy Birthday" to Laura, our January birthday lady.

The Treasurer's Report featuring our bank balances at $8,380.78 was read by Sandy and accepted unanimously.

Our December attendance was 59% and deemed "better." Having perfect attendance in December were Kathy, Jim Lowell, Tom Tikkanen, Sandy, Richard, Peter, Joe, and Chuck. The mention of Chuck's name drew a hearty applause and laughter and he promptly donated a few happy dollars in thanks for the special recognition.

Choices Report: Calumet High School is next up for the Choices program on January 13.

Scholarships: On track.

Visioning Program: With more than 70% acceptance, Richard Schaefer expects a great outcome. He asked for numerous items such as easel pads, pens, etc. to assist in the prigram and members donated or promised top donate most of them,. The program takes place on February 15 with set up at 4 p.m. and the actual program at 5 p.m. Te Irish Times is the venue and there will be no Wednesday meeting that week.

Foundation 5 x 5 Clubs: Any reports both clubs on track.

Attending this meeting were 15 members. President Tim announced that there was to be no prepared program so he suggested we just eat and socialize. Before we ate, however, many members came prepared to extract some coins from Dan Dalquist for the blatantly self-promoting article in the Daily Mining Gazette (sorry, Dan, I couldn't resist): one came suggesting an apt amount to atone; another brought the article in case there was any disagreement. But Dan, good fellow that he is, had his $40 Happy Dollars ready in hand to add to our treasury. Here is a copy of the feature story iu case you missed it.

HANGING UP HIS SKIS

RIPLEY?- Part of Dan Dalquist's regimen for getting ready to go on ski patrol duty in the service's building at Mont Ripley Ski Hill is putting on a brace for the missing anterior cruciate ligament in his right leg.

Dalquist, who damaged his knee during one of his ski patrol duties, said the brace is the only thing that keeps him on skis.

"The alternative is not skiing," he said. "That would be unacceptable."

Dalquist, who graduated from Houghton High School and Michigan Technological University, will be retiring as an active ski patrol member after 40 years at the end of the current season in March or April. He'll continue to be an instructor for the rescue service, however.

In January 1971, when he was an 18-year-old student at Tech, the 58-year-old Dalquist said he began his career as a member of the Mont Ripley Ski Patrol.

"It seemed interesting," he said. "I just stuck with it."

When he started at the ski hill, Dalquist said it was much less developed than it is now. There were only a few rope tows rather the T-bar and chairlifts there now. There were many more trees, also, which were eventually cut down to make room for more ski runs.

When he started in the ski patrol, Dalquist, who was already a skier, said part of the training was learning Red Cross emergency care, but it was a bit different than it is now.

"CPR didn't exist," he said.

Dalquist said his ski patrol career didn't get off to a very auspicious start.

"I failed my first first-aid exam," he said.

He passed the exam the next year, however, Dalquist said, and ironically, he became a teacher of the first aid course.

Other training included rescue skiing techniques and learning to use the rescue sled, Dalquist said. Much of those techniques are still taught to new members.

As a trainer, Dalquist said he instructs members on chairlift rescues.

"That's been my area of expertise since 1972," he said.

Training for local ski patrol members is based on methods created by the National Ski Patrol, Dalquist said, but they can be adapted for local needs.

"The local patrols are autonomous," he said.

Dalquist said in the 40 years he's been in the ski patrol, many things have stayed the same, but some things have changed.

"One of the things that have changed over the years is the emphasis on interacting with our (injured or rescued) guests," he said.

Making a personal connection with the people they help is part of each rescue, now, Dalquist said.

Mont Ripley is a steep and fast ski hill, Dalquist said, and that leads to some very serious accidents.

"We've had some tremendous speed-related incidences," he said.

There were no jumps on the hill 12 years ago, but there are some now, Dalquist said.

"That has consequences," he said.

Many people use the jumps, some of whom really shouldn't, but Dalquist said there's no way to stop inexperienced skiers from using them.

"You really can't," he said. "You can make suggestions."

The emphasis now is on "extreme" skiing, including spinning in the air, Dalquist said, but he leaves that to younger skiers.

"I don't do that," he said.

Dalquist said one incident on Mont Ripley actually involved a ski patrol member, who got injured in a part of the hill not used for skiing. The rescue squad, which he wasn't a part of that particular time, sent to help the ski patrol member, became disoriented and rather than taking him downhill to M-26, took the much more difficult uphill route.

That incident provided a valuable lesson for ski patrol members.

"It's something we still work with and bring up in training, to go downhill," he said.

During his ski patrol career, Dalquist said equipment, including boots and skis, have changed tremendously. The skis he uses now are shorter than when he started, and they have a parabolic curve on the edges which make turning much quicker. It took him an entire ski season to learn to use the new skis.

Besides working at Mont Ripley, Dalquist said he also worked at Cliffs Ridge in 1977, and Mount Holly near Flint for the 1979-80 ski season. He returned to Mont Ripley in 1980, and has been there since.

Over the 40 years he's been in ski patrol, Dalquist said he's earned some awards and appointments, including national runner-up as a Silver Merit Star Outstanding Instructor, the national Distinguished Service Award, national, regional and local Certificates of Appreciation and others. He's also been a leader or advisor in many areas for the Mont Ripley ski patrol.

Dalquist said the national ski patrol appointment is something for which he's particularly proud.

"National appointment is not something you can apply for or request," he said. "You must be recommended by your peers."

Although he'll be retiring as an active ski patrol member in spring, Dalquist said he'll stay on as an instructor, maybe for as many as 10 more years.

Besides the memories of the experiences he's had during his career in ski patrol, Dalquist said the people he's met and worked with are very important to him.

"The friendships over the years are awesome," he said.

Thanks for the money, Dan. It is a great story and was great career on skis. We'll see y'all next year.

Attendance today was 19 including guests Tori Roose, our scholarship recipient, and Kari Dalquist Bangtson our speaker.

At the outset of the meeting, Tori gave the members an update on her progress that was deemed very significant. It is gratifying to see the contribution we make to these scholarship student bear fruit.

After luncheon and some happy dollars we were treated to a video presentation of Kari Bangtson's biking tour of Scandinavia with her friend, April, to study alternative sources of energy and to assess the carbon footprint of four countries, Iceland, Sweden, Norway and Denmark. She was able to accomplish this with the aid of a grant from "Funds for Teachers," and organization that funds teacher projects with the goal of getting people excited about teaching and also in keeping them as teachers once they are in the profession.

The entire land portion of the study was accomplished by Kari and her friend on their bicycles, bicycles complete with their panniers loaded with tents and all their supplies.

They began in Iceland where geo-thermal and hydroelectric energy was studied and observed. Te beauty of geo-thermal is the fact that the supported infrastructure is hardly affected: "Drill a hole and there it is and when you're finished, move on the another hole." Simple.

In Sweden, they concentrated on observing the massive organization supporting recycling of waste and deriving energy savings through that process. In this manner, one's carbon footprint is greatly reduced if almost nil.

In Denmark they studied Wind and solar energy and in Norway energy through ocean wave technology.

Key to all these systems, they learned, was fourfold: First, one must produce the renewable energy; second, one must have access to an energy grid; third, one must be able to enter the grid; and fourth, it must be shown to have a stable and sustainable price (and I suppose profit) level.

They finished their trip in the cycling capital of the world, Amsterdam, Holland. Kari showed a video of one of Amsterdam's bike parking garage, a four-story parking garage with literally thousands of bicycles parked side by side.

With the beautiful video shots of the Scandanavian countryside, Kari and April had to keep reminding the viewers with a disclaimer, "It's only partially about the bike."

All in all, it was a wonderful presentation and daddy Dalquist was mighty proud of his daughter from Colorado.

Regular Meeting, December 15, 2010

President Tim started the meeting by asking for Rotary members to help with setting out and lighting the Italian Hall Luminaries and picking them up. Set up is Dec 24 at 1pm and Takedown is Christmas Day at 11 am. Estimated time is 1 hour for each. Please contact Jeff Primeau at jeff@opusweb.com. This is a project our Club has helped with funding and manpower.

Jim Lowell and Andy Murtagh reported 5 Rotarians and 1 spouse lent a hand to the Keweenaw County Sheriff on Tuesday in organizing the toys for the No Kid Without A Christmas program. Thanks to all who helped.

Program: The CLK High School Business Professional Associatiuon – sent a team to our meeting. The students: Meagan Yeo, Hannah Gregorich, Selena Stromer and George Gruver, are preparing for the Regional BPA Competition in January. This event places students from other UP high schools in various types of competitions. Winners will continue to the State competition with the potential to attend the national competition in Washington DC.

A Financial Analyst team from the CLK School BPA placed 3rd in the nation last year!
This team is focusing upon Presentation management. They delivered a power-point program on intern programs. Each of the 4 students spoke. We learned that intern programs may be available at the high school and collegiate levels. High schools programs are limited to CTE programs such as nursing. College or university programs might be domestic or international.
Several questions and comments were directed to the students after their presentation. The Club felt the students had performed well and wished them luck with their competition.

Vice President Kathy presided over the meeting in President Tim’s absence.

Several Happy dollars were collected as well as fines for either not showing up for a bell-ringing shift due to illness or appearing to ring the bell at the correct time but wrong place! No names mentioned; you had to be at the meeting.

Program: Laura Miller, Executive Director of the Calumet Theatre and a CLK Rotary member, gave the club an interesting presentation on the history of the Theatr that opened in 1900. Some of the famous people who performed at the Theatre were Sarah Bernhardt, Douglas Fairbanks, and John Philips Sousa and his band.

The Theatre hosts over 50 plus performances per year including high school plays and concerts. In addition, the volunteers give guided tours. Most importantly, it is included on the National Register of Historic Places and is Participating Historic Site for the Keweenaw National Historic Park.

Built for $75,000, it is in dire need of repairs. Laura focused on the need for a new roof that needs to be re-engineered and replaced. The original design, still in place, brings water off the roof and into the building for disposal. Everything leaks including the roof.

Water damage is severe. Roof rafters are damaged. Ceilings, walls, and floors damaged. Emergency efforts include fastening tarps to ceilings so water is directed to buckets that are emptied by staff and volunteers as needed. The proscenium arch has water running along the backside to buckets.

The Village of Calumet owns the structure but does not have the resources to make the necessary repairs, so they have turned to the Pepsi Corporation “Challenge Grant Program.” If the Theatre is the top vote-getter for December, the prize is $250,000!

Business Meeting, December 1, 2010

Sorry for all the mistakes. I'll get this thing right eventually.

Attendance: 21, including 4 guests David and Linda Grahek, Sheriff Ron Lahti and Laura Miller’s mother Catherine Lee.

President Tim Baroni called the meeting to order then started with a round of happy dollars and announcements.

Laura Miller announced that the Calumet Theatre is officially vying for $250,000 from the Pepsi Refresh project. Money would be used for a new roof.

Tom Tikkanen noted that the Chamber of Commerce is looking for members for its Board of Directors and suggested that if anyone is interested they can contact Dallas Bond, C of C Executive Director. Tom noted that CLK Rotary has been well represented over the last decade or do with Dan, Jim, Kevin, Sue and himself representing the Calumet area.

Finance report: Sandy reported the following balances: River Valley - $1508.50, Superior National - $4234.73, Superior National Checking Acct - $4743.14. Motion to accept was approved (Tom T/Kevin S/Unanimous).

Steve Dlubula was recognized for a December birthday.

Attendance for November was 55%. Members with perfect attendance were Dan Dalquist, Joe Enrietti, Don Kilpela, Jim Lowell, Andy Murtagh, Dick Schaefer, Scott See, Pete Vorhes

Committee Reports:

Education – Choices in Lake Linden is done, currently scheduling CLK HS for January.

Spaghetti Dinner – Kevin is working on a poster. Dinner is scheduled for Mar. 11.

Visioning – Scheduled for Feb. 15, Schaefer reports that about 90% of club members plan to attend.

Luminaries – Jeff has ordered and received electric candles which will replace wax candles this year. He expects these to be easier to use and more reliable. We need one or two persons to help place luminaries on Christmas Eve and retrieve them on Christmas morning.

Foundation – Amy reports that we can start another 5x5 club if there is interest. She announced PHF recipients for this year, selected at random from current 5x5 clubs.

Sheriff Lahti talked briefly about the No Kid Without a Christmas program this year. He reported that he is currently collecting requests for help and thanked Rotary and other organizations who help with funding and distribution. President Baroni presented him with a check for $500 from the Club and told Lahti that he would get another $500 when club members have finished donations and Range Bank has contributed enough to reach the $500 level. Club members will convene on Dec. 14 at 9am in the Keweenaw Co. Court House to help sort and distribute gifts.

The monthly 50-50 drawing was won by the NKWC project and $42 was given to Sheriff Ron Lahti.

November 27 Meeting

Laura Miller announced the Calumet Theatre expects to be approved to participate in the December 2010 Pepsi Refresh challenge. This opportunity will put the theatre in the national voting competition for funding. The $$ would be used for a new roof. Laura will let CLK Rotary know when to start voting. The key is – vote daily and get friends/family to vote daily!

Jim Lowell – CLK Rotary CHOICES chairperson, gave the program today. CHOICES is a 25 yr old program focused on 8^th/9^th grade students with the objective of 1) Addressing the high school dropout problem, 2) increasing the positive school engagement and, 3) improving students' knowledge, learning, attitude and motivation related to education and their future. Bottom line, help the students learn the short-term and long-term consequences of choices they make today and tomorrow.

Kudos to the CLK Rotary CHOICES team: Tom Tikkanen, Jim Lowell, Keith Stenger, Chris Davidson (Horizon School),Kevin Store, Tim Baroni, Janis Vivian, and Kathy Johnson. These folks have been trained to present the program to the CLK, Lake Linden/Hubbell and Horizon’s Schools. November 11 & 12 saw 41 ninth grade students in Lake Linden/Hubbell receive the CHOICES training. CLK schools will see 98 ninth grade students attend the presentations in January 2011.

CHOICES is presented by community members, not teachers, over 2 days. Each 50 minute presentation is interactive. It is a holistic approach expecting support from the families and teachers. Presentations are done by community members & organizations investing their time and money to get the students engaged in their own future. CLK Rotary will spend approximately $600 for teach materials this year in addition to the time the Presentation Team has invested.

Jim explained the CHOICES program does review the curriculum and presentation methods. The program is being restructured to address 8^th grade children. It is also going digital. Most of the children are cell-phone savvy. The presentation will be completely interactive and focus on using game apps on cell phones for expressing the consequences, both good and bad, of making choices.

Jim closed the program by thanking the CHOICES team and the club. He reminded us all there is always a need for more Rotarians to become trained instructors. If you are interested, contact Jim Lowell.

The program: Sarah Shann, a senior Civil Engineering student at MTU and Dr. Dave Watkins, Advisor, rose to tell us about the MTU chapter activities of Engineers Without Borders. There are about 60 active members of the chapter representing a variety of disciplines all of which are necessary in any given project. In addition to fund-raising, the chapter is involved in university services, conferences, grant writing, and especially the projects themselves. For example:

Project 1: A Nutrition and Day Care center in El Porvenir, Honduras. The project designed a community and day care plan and engineering drawings on a given site.

Project 2: In Bolivia, in conjunction with the Rotary Etta Project, a hygienic composing toilet to replace the pits and unsanitary methods in use.

Project 3: In Guatamala, a clean water project, named the Copper Country Guatamalen Accompiament Project in which sanitary wells are constructed along with hand pumps and health information instruction. One example, is a coloring book for youngsters to help them know and practice good health standards.

Today, we met at the new Garden View Assisted Living and Memory Care and were hosted by the Director, Janice Vivian.

Attendance was 21 including guests Linda & David Grahek, Chuck Wicker with roses from the Hancock Rotary Club Fund-raiser, and Betty Kilpela. The roses are beautiful and only $50 per dozen all to the benefit of benefit of Rotary. They are still available at Kathy's Country Flowers.

In addition, Karen King represented the CLK schools.

Jim Lowell, who presided, reminded everyone of the meeting from 9-12 on December 14 at the Keweenaw County Courthouse to work on the Sheriff's Annual Christmas Presents.

The rest of the meeting was devoted to honoring our Veterans. Andy Murtaugh played a moving music video entitled, A Pittance of Time, written and performed by Terry Kelly of Newfoundland. Andy reminded us of a Veteran's Day tradition in Canada: at 11 a.m. on the 11th day of the 11th month, the entire country stops for 2 minutes in remembrance of all veterans.

In addition, Andy ordered a cake decorated with "235" honoring the United States Marine Corps 235th birthday. He presented it to former Sgt. Don Kilpela who shared it with the group.

Kilpela, a noncom, says he was gratified to be in the company of so many retired officers and salutes them all as well as all veterans everywhere.

Following this, the meeting adjourned and Janice took everyone on a tour of the brand new facility. Speaking for the group, it is a warm and interesting home where everyone should feel very comfportable, The sleeping rooms are large and the recreation areas and dinner spaces very pleasant. All in all, it is a wonderful home for our elderly.

Ad hoc President Jim Lowell brought the meeting to order and after lunch and a round of happy dollars, worked his way through the agenda.

First on the agenda was the traditional lusty salute to November birthdays, namely Joel, Phil, Amy, Babette, and Scott.

Financial Report: Sandy delivered the Financial Report showing a "Total on Deposit of $11,104.90." Motion to accept the report was seconded and passed.

Attendance in October was 59% with perfect attendance by Tim, Patsy, Dan, Jim, Dick, Tom T., and Peter.

Visioning Program: Chairman Dick Schaefer reminds everyone that the program will be held at the Irish Times on February 15, 2011, from 5-9 p.m. This important work session will deal with our future as a viable Rotary Club. Accordingly, everyone is encouraged to attend. Happily, Dick reported that almost everyone is signed up at present. There will be no luncheon meeting on February 16.

Italian Hall Luminaries: Prior to placing the candles, Jeff will look into purchasing a candle (or other source) that will burn longer and resist the weather better.

Foundation 5 X 5 Club. Amy reported that she is considering awarding the 5x5 fellowships at the visioning program in February. She also mentioned that there is still a space available on one of the clubs.

Provisional Membership: The board requested that the club review our Provisional Membership policy. Much discussion followed with the sense of the meeting seeming to favor eliminating the provision. A motion to discontinue provisional membership with the proviso that the two members taking advantage of it, namely Jim Lowrie and Babette Tikkanen, be grandfathered and allowed to remain as provisional members. The motion was discussed thoroughly and passed with a split decision.

Raffle: Won by Patsy. Unfortunately. Patsy had left by the time we got around to the drawing so Dan accepted the money on her behalf and gave it to Tom T. to give to Patsy.

In closing, Jim reminded everyone that the Board Meetings are at the Range Bank Conference Room at 4 p.m. the third Tuesday of the month. Next one is on November 16.

Chuck Nelson announced the Keweenaw Health Foundation concert at the Calumet Theatre on Thursday. November 4, featuring ventriloquist and comedian, Kevin Johnson, and guaranteed to be a family show.

A number of other Happy dollars were offered causing President Tim to remind us our program needed time!

Program: Dan Harri is the new General Manager of the Keweenaw Mountain Lodge. Dan is a professionally trained executive chef. He graduated from CLK Schools in 1980. His work experience includes 18 years as chef and Executive Chef for Don Shula’s restaurants, Chef at Sandal’s Resorts, Planet Hollywood and several other locations. Bottom line, he has a ton of experience in the restaurant and service industry.

Dan has found the move from corporate to county-owned to be a challenge. He is the 15th GM since the Lodge opened in 1934. He has hit the ground running spending time learning the nuances of the Keweenaw Mountain Lodge and organizing the staff and systems. Dan and the staff have been creative in their efforts. Example: Dan delivered all the scrap metal lying around the Lodge and sold it as scrap. The money raised has been used for moving and repurposing the antique Toro tractor to the 1st Tee as a photo opportunity for customers.

Ninety % of the visitors to the Lodge are from outside of our area. In order to encourage residents of Houghton and Keweenaw counties to use the Lodge, Dan announced a 15% discount to any resident of either county. He reminded us the lodge will offer a skating rink, toboggan hill, snowshoeing and cross-country skiing and that it will have a picnic area open with hot coffee and hot water. Of course, users are encouraged to order a meal and beverage.

Dan’s passion for his job is very apparent when you hear him and I think he will be successful. We look forward to our next visit to the Keweenaw Mountain Lodge.

A variety of announcements and happy dollars: Tom Tikkanen introduced his daughter Airman Christina Tikkanen. She has just graduated from the USAF Intelligence training school and is enjoying a short leave. Amy Roberts announced she had BSA popcorn for sale and raffle tickets for CLK Jr. Hockey.

Elden Johnson gave a brief update on the CHOICES program. Last year 400 students received the program. This year over 500 area students will see the CHOICES message. Elden, and Jim Lowell, our CHOICES chairperson. need more Rotary members to train as presenters.

Program: Jim Lowell talked about his experiences as a bee-keeper. Jim demonstrated how a hive was assembled and explained the function of the brood hives as opposed to the Super where the honey is produced.

We learned the queen uses the brood hives for laying eggs that produce worker bees. The worker bees fly to the various flowers & plants to collect nectar. That process also pollinates plants. Jim told us the true value of bees is their ability to pollinate. A secondary value is the honey.

One of the questions asked was how the bees are prepared for winter. Jim said he removes the Supers and leaves only brood hives. He wraps the hive (containing several brood hives) in waxed cardboard for insulation. The bees will stay inside until temps exceed 40 degrees then they will leave for a cleansing flight. Jim explained one of the threats was ice build up over the combs which stops the bees from having food and they starve. He needs to remove moisture to reduce the chances of ice buildup.

1. LAST CHANCE HIGHWAY PICKUP Saturday Oct 16 at 0900. Meet at the corner of Pine St and US 41 on the north side of Calumet.

2. Amy Roberts asks CLK rotary members to consider travelling to Green Bay WI on Nov 10 to hear the Rotary International President speak. She also said Paul Harris Fellows will be subsidized for this event only, with the District contributing $250 and RI National contributing $250. In short, for a contribution to Rotary Foundation of $500, you can receive a Paul Harris Fellowship and have it presented to you personally by the International President of Rotark, Tay Klinginsmith. Quite the opportunity!

3. Happy $$: Several contributions were made from members including Happy Dollars for Terry Smythe for receiving the Salvation Army Citizen of the Year award. Congratulations to Terry!

4. Bob Sharkey – incoming District governor, presented an opportunity for our club to make some money by selling coffee from Green Mountain. Selling a bag of ground coffee for $10 will bring $3 to our Club and $1 to any country growing coffee beans for clean water projects. Bob also announced an opportunity to buy winter coats for children at a price of $17. The coats will have a tag inside the coat indicating Rotary donated the coat. Also, Bob said that the district meeting planning committee will meet on Thurs Oct 14 at 5:30 pm at the Library Restaurant & Bar in Houghton.

Program: Julie Crowl and Tom Vichich talked with the Club about the process of becoming a bone marrow donor. On Wednesday, Oct 20th, from 11:30 to 7 p.m., a Bone marrow registry drive will be held at the Finnish American Center on Quincy Street in Hancock. Cost to register is $25. Donors need to be in good health and between the ages of 18-60. Registry involves some paperwork and taking a swab from inside your cheek. Once complete, the donor stays on the Registry until a match is found.

This effort is being done to help Pete Nissila find a bone marrow donor. Pete, a member of the Hancock Rotary Club, ran Nissila’s Greenhouse in Ripley. He and his wife closed the business and relocated to Oregon where Pete found work as his city’s horticulturist. This summer he developed a cold that became more sever. He was diagnosed with an acute and rapid form of leukemia. His best chance for survival is a bone marrow transplant from a donor with a Scandinavian background.

In addition to actually becoming a donor, you might just offer to sponsor a potential donor by contributing the $25 to the registry. The CLK Rotary Club Board of Directors will investigate at their next board meeting being a sponsor for potential donors.

Program: John Griffith introduced the Northwoods Conservancy and its role in preserving land and lakeshore in the Keweenaw. The NWC has protected over 2 miles of Lake Superior shoreline and several thousand acres of woodland and marsh. The land generally is multiuse and available for recreation and some for hunting.

Conglomerate Falls is the current project. This waterfall and surrounding land are accessed from S Farmers Block Road off the 5 mile point road. The seller is asking for $115,000. NWC needs to raise $30,000 as the down payment with the balance being financed. The deadline for the deal is Oct 01, 2010. If you have passed the deadline, contribute anyway and they will see that it is made part of the grant. For donation purposes, the NWC is a 501-C-3 corporatrion.

The Conglomerate Falls parcel includes a 15-year-old, 1-room cabin that will be available for rent. Estimated cost will be $500 per week. During hunting season, cabin renters will be able to hunt on the property.

Additionally, the cabin needs several things including installation of a composting toilet, general maintenance of the cabin, and construction of benches. Morover, NWC needs trail work as well. Is this a type of project CLK Rotary wants to adopt? Feedback should be directed to our Board members and officers.

Several questions were directed to John Griffith. John ended his presentation asking for members to consider donating to the Conglomerate Falls campaign. AT that point, Rotarian Sue Dana started the ball rolling with a donation followed by a number of Rotary members. Good gesture of support team!

Attendance = 25 including guests Steve Selvick our District Governor (District 6220), Dave & Linda Grahek, Assistant District Governor Bob Sharkey, and Marie Buche, President Houghton Rotary.

Announcements: Highway Pickup will be Saturday October 02. Meet at corner of Pine St and US 41 on the north side of Calumet at 0900. Phil passed around a signup sheet. This project needs lots of hands so please check your schedule and help.

A multitude of fines and Happy Dollars were collected. Thanks to all who participated.

Program: District Governor Steve Selvick talked about Rotary International motto of ”Buildling Communities and Bridging Continents”. His view was children are the key! Steve reported Rotary has had a focus on children since the start and youth are now our 5th Ave of Service.

Steve talked about the Family of Rotary and Rotarians need to balance family + work + Community + the world + Rotary. Our focus upon Service Above Self as the Rotary motto helps separate Rotary from other civic clubs. We have an amazing variety of local, regional, national, and international on-going projects to support.

Steve, supports emphatically the local clubs of his District 6220 and will help them attain the goals that they themselves set. This is a bottom up district administration that focuses on the individual clubs and their goals. All we have to do is ask for help when we need it. As a club, we need to complete the Visioning program. Keep what is working for and discard what is not and then replace discarded ones with new projects.
Steve reviewed in detail a variety of District 6220 programs including the ETTA project, Power Flour, and SAMP (Surplus medical supplies).

At the conclusion of his talk, Steve awarded a well-deserved Rotary Mug to Past President Jim Lowell for his past and continuing work on all the projects of the CLK Rotary Club. We can think of no one more deserving.

Jim Lowell asked the membership for a laptop to be donated to the club. The computer is needed by the club's treasurer to track and report our finances.

CHOICES presenters are needed for this fall. If any CLK Club members are interested – please contact Jim Lowell. More presenters make the task much easier.

Program: Dan Dalquist gave a presentation on Investing and our Economy. Basic message was that our economy has the ability to heal itself. Dan said that, "One, we have been in bad economic situations before and two, we are definitely seeing signs of recovery." Thanks for the upbeat and interesting program, Dan.

Several Happy Dollars & Announcements: A Reminder to all CLK Rotarians that our District Governor, Steve Selvick, will be addressing our next meeting, September 22. We need a full house!

ADG Bob Sharkey reported on his experiences at the RYLA program. He mentioned being in a group with a member of the CLK ROTC contingent and how impressed he was of her abilities.

A reminder of the District Meeting Planning Committee which will hold it’s first meeting on Thursday 9/16 at 5:30 at the KBC. Additional participation from CLK will be appreciated.

Scott See announced that in a voting contest for specific funding. the Keweenaw National Historic Park was the No. 1 park in Michigan.

VP Kathy read a Thank You note from a senior citizen group. They appreciated the Tamburitzan tickets and the CLK Rotary support of the performance.

Program: A video of the ETTA project in Bolivia. A moving story told by Sara Houghton of Marquette. This project focuses on providing proper food (using the Power Flour program) to help the children become healthy. In addition, education and coaching skills for moms in such areas as job skills and providing micro-financing to help the moms get a business started as well as teaching skills to grow food.

As each center is developed, the local people are trained to maintain and continue the work. At that point, the ETTA project starts another center in a poverty-ridden section of the town. Partners in the project include Rotary District 6220 (our district) and Engineers Without Borders

District 6220 has a goal to provide $50,000 to the ETTA projects. Each Club in the District is encouraged to look at the ETTA project and make a decision about monetary support.

President Tim asked the Club for ideas regarding a Signature Project, something to which the CLK Rotary can attach its name. The idea is to start planning now. Suggestions should be sent to Tim or to any board member.

Tim asked for all members to consider a local dues increase, perhaps to $5.00 per quarter. Dues for District and National are $104 per year. This generated a discussion about tax deductibility of meals for CLK Rotarians. This is an issue that each Rotarian needs to discuss with her or his tax preparer.

Financial Report: Treasurer Sandy announced the Club has $4,221.51 in Savings and $5,156.29 in Checking as of 8/31/10.

The 2010-2011 budget was distributed to the members attending. After discussion, the budget was passed.

Andy requested the Board consider contributing money to the Northwoods Conservancy to help with the purchase of land at the mouth of the Gratiot River. Andy also suggested that individual Rotarians and/or their businesses consider donating toward the purchase. Donations can be sent to: Northwoods, PO Box 124, Calumet, Michigan 49913. Information on the purchase can be found at www.northwoodsconservancy.org.

Here's an early reminder that our September 22 meeting will feature our District Governor, Steve Selvick. This is a meeting we need to have all of our members in attendance.

Attendance: 24 members and guests.

Guests were Houghton County Sheriff Brian McLean, Truman Obermeyer, Houghton County Justice Center Committee, and Sherry Ala, representing the District Court. Also Heidi and Nelson Vitso, Rotarians from Ann Arbor MI. Heidi is Phil Smythe’s sister in law.

President Tim called the meeting to order and promptly paid his fines that were assessed last week. Specifically, he was fined for not wearing his Rotary shirt to the Tammies and not fulfilling the presidential duties of introducing them in the Theatre prior to the show.

A number of members paid Happy dollars for announcements. You had to be there to hear Sue Dana’s announcement about kilts!

Amy Roberts announced a vacancy in one of the 5x5 Foundation clubs. Any interested CLK Rotary member should contact Amy direct. A 5x5 club is consists of five Rotarians who pledge $50 per quarter or $200 per year for 5 years. Each year one of the 5 names is drawn and that member receives a Paul Harris Fellowship. Accordingly, at the end of the 5-year period, each member will have donated $1000 to the Foundation and each will have received a Paul Harris Fellowship. Our Club has two of the 5x5 clubs.

Truman Obermeyer, a member of the Houghton County Justice Center Committee presented information about the current county jail and the proposed Justice Center. He showed a variety of photos of the jail, the “confidential” McDonald’s bench used when prisoners and attorney’s talk, the lack of appropriate facilities for segregating men and women as well as monitoring prisoner activities.

Most importantly, he pointed out that state & federal laws mandate requirements for jails and that the current facility is out of compliance.

Truman also showed pictures of the Sheriff Department's combined armory/evidence room/processing & training center/conference room that was in reality an old bedroom, one the sheriff actually lived in when he stayed in the jail. His last set of photos showed the 97^th district court room and office space. It was small, crowded and provided no separation between prisoners and visitors.

In short, the photos illustrating the poor facilities were pretty convincing evidence for the need for a new Justice Center in Houghton.

The second part of his presentation was a discussion of the proposed facility. It is hoped to build a new facility that will hold the Sheriff Dept and jail (140 beds) as well as the District Court. Locations are limited inasmuch as state law requires that the Sheriff Department and District Court be located in the County Seat. That eliminates all locations other than the city of Houghton. Another consideration is the cost of transporting prisoners to and from the court. It is a requirement that two officers must attend the transportation thereby creating an additional expense as well as making those officers unavailable for ordinary police work such as patrolling the streets.

The recommended location is the old Houghton High school lot which is immediately west of the current courthouse. Transport of prisoners is easy as the court will be in the same building. The old space in the Courthouse will be used for expansion by other departments. Moreover, the old jail would be used for much-needed storage.

Truman said that the needed millage request will be on the November ballot and that approving the millage will only increase the taxes on a $100,000-valued home by approximately $34 per year.

Attendance at this weekly regular meeting was twenty-six including guests Dave & Linda Grahek and their granddaughter Chloe, Jerry Bowersox (Guest of Tom Tikkanen), and Darryl Pearce, Superintendent, CLK Schools.

President Tim called the meeting to order. Guest Jerry Bowersox gave a thorough description of the upcoming Highland Games.

Tamburitzans Report: total ticket sales were 566 with the Theater selling 360 and CLK Rotary selling 206. Our project budget had an overall sales goal of 600, so good job everyone! Our estimated net should be approx $2500. We do not have final costs from the printer, hotel, and Pizza Works.

In addition, Tom offered a big "Thank You" to all the Rotarians and others who hosted Tammies cast members at their homes on Saturday night. President Tim said his family really enjoyed meeting and talking with the performers who stayed with them.

Program: Darryl Pearce gave an update on several projects at the CLK schools. He thanked CLK Rotary for providing and conducting the CHOICES program and said he has received positive feedback on the program.

The schools staffs have been busy with building projects and updating technology. The roof replacement process is very close to complete. The contractor gave his crew the week off due to the extreme winds and rain. Darryl explained the bidding process and why no local contractors were able to bid. He did say the contractor hired some local workers and those from out of the area were housed at the AmericInn and spent money in the community.

The technology upgrades should be ready for the start of this school year. In addition to the high-tech white boards, each student grade 4- 12 will receive a “one-to-one” computing device. This device will replace textbooks, allow for easy updating, and reduce the demand for computer labs.

Energy: the CLK school buildings are receiving more efficient lighting and control systems. Installing auto on/off lights in bathrooms, controls that reduced the classroom light as daylight enters the room, and more efficient light fixtures will all help reduce the energy bills.

Darryl's presentation was followed by questions and answers and other comments from members.

President Tim announced that CLK School System will become a Rotary member.

A number of Happy $$ were collected today by our Sergeant at Arms – Phil Smythe. Welcome back Phil!

Tammies Announcements: 1. Ushers are needed at the Theatre. Joe E, Jim L, Dan D and Tom T all helped. 2. Tom T distributed the housing assignments. 3. Ticket sales to date are CLK Rotary = 141 and the Theatre 279 for total of 424. More sales were received at the meeting. A final tally will be at the Aug 18 meeting along with the sales prizes. 4. A reminder to all Rotarians to wear their blue Rotary shirts at the concert on Sat 8/14.

Scott Dianda – candidate for the 110 District seat, presented his platform at the meeting. Many of his views and solutions can be found at his web site: www.votedianda.com Interested Rotarians can go to the website for detailed information.

He is conducting a fund-raising social at the Ramada Inn in Hancock on Thursday evening August 19 from 6 to 8 p.m. His special guest will be Senator Carl Levin.

Scott did have several Rotarians address questions & comments to him both during his presentation and after the meeting adjourned.

President Tim announced the following August birthdays: George Kiiskila, Chuck Nelson and Dan Dalquist.

President Tim is looking for program ideas. Any CLK Rotary member who has a suggestion(s) should send them to Tim via email.

July Attendance – perfect attendance included: Jim Lowell, Patsi Bastian, Dan Dalquist, Tim Baroni, Joel Keranen and Amy Roberts.

Board meetings will be the 3rd Tuesday of the month at 4 p.m. at the Range Bank conference room. All officers and club members are invited.

Tammies Report: Total ticket sales as of Wednesday at 11 a.m. were 218 – Theatre and Rotary sales combined. Several Rotary members turned in sales forms at that meeting. WE NEED TO SELL A LOT OF TICKETS THIS WEEK FOR THE EVENT TO BE A FINANCIAL SUCCESS! Each Rotary member was sent a list of businesses to contact. Contact them before Wed. Lets get the total sales up over 600!

Tom Tikkanen reported that all the Tammies have been housed. A BIG THANK YOU to all Rotarians housing the performers.

President Tim announced the Board will have a budget to present in September.

Dan Dalquist reminded the Rotary Group helping at the Copperman to be at Esery Park by 9 a.m. That group includes Rich Schaefer, Andy Murtagh, Tim Baroni, Capt Don Kilpela and Dan Dalquist.

Guests included Aaron Rogers and Dan Kauppi of the Copper Harbor Trails Club.

President Tim made several announcements including reminding the Club about the monthly Board meeting held at Range Bank in the conference room.

Tammies Announcement: Total of 73 tickets sold by CLK Rotary and 64 by the Theatre = 137. Goal is 600 ticket w/400 sold by CLK Rotary! Sponsor list will be sent to the membership again – Rotarians need to contact the appropriate businesses for ticket sales.

Jim Lowell has sent out a sales script – please use it!!

Tom Tikkanen has been working hard on housing for the Tammies. If you can help house 2 or more – please let Tom know.

Program: the Copper Harbor Trails club focuses upon non-motorized use trails in the Copper Harbor area. Recently, the Copper Harbor Mountain Bike Trails were named an EPIC RIDE by the IMBA (International Mountain Bike Association. It is 1 of 48 EPIC RIDE trails in the world.

The CHTC has over 200 members from a wide range of states. They support the trail-building effort and help with the publicity for the Club. Aaron Rogers is the primary trail-builder and Dan Kauppi is in charge of marketing the trails. Several questions/comments were raised about the need to collect data for use in documenting the economic impact of the trails.

Businesses in the Copper Harbor area have noticed the effect of the bicycling public. The cyclists use the trails and spend dollars for food and drink afterward. In addition, they stay in the local motels. Most important, however, is that cyclists who ride the CH trails are happy about their experiences and telling others to head North.

Plans include adding a trail to Hunter’s Point separate from the current walking trail and developing a 30 mile single track trail around the north end of the Keweenaw. Cyclists say "that would be marvelous."

Aaron and Dan's final words were to encourage Rotarians to come up and try the trails.

We were happy to see both Phil and Andy attending today however we missed the Cookie Inspector (Rich Schaefer) and Capt Don Kilpela (family reunion).

President Tim reminded the Club of the Board meetings and said he would have a report at the next business meeting. Several members had announcements.

Tammies Announcement: (1) Sales Contest – no new tickets were sold as reported by the Theatre. We need to sell 400 tickets. Total as of wed July 14 = 36. (2) A list of businesses for Rotarians to contact has been sent by email to our membership. Tickets sold to sponsors will be included in the weekly sales contest. (4) Tom Tikkanen will be contacting each Rotarian asking for housing for the Tammies. This is a great opportunity for your household to learn about the Tammies and the kids. Please say "Yes" when Tom calls you. (5) Tammies Ticket Sales forms are available on our Club website: www.clkrotary.org (6)Jim Lowell is writing a document on the history of the Tammies and the Calumet area. This will be routed to each Rotarian.

Jay Ruohonen, President of Talon Research, presented a program on their proprietary product Bridgeguard.. This system uses infra-red technology to “see: delamination cracks in concrete bridge decks.

The key is the technology. Up to this point, a bridge lane would be closed while workers dragged a chain across the deck and listened for hollow sounds indicating a possible delamination. The Bridgeguard system is used from a moving vehicle so bridges do not need to be closed and workers need not walk the bridge.

A vehicle with the infrared system on it, drives across at a constant speed while filing the bridge The data is processed thru the software developed by Talon Research to identify the delaminations. Jay said there were over 600,000 bridges in the US that need to be inspected every 2 years. Michigan has over 10800 bridges! A very interesting presentation.

A good crowd at today’s meeting!: 23 Rotarians and guests. Guests included Dave & Linda Grahek, Paul Gauthier, a visiting Rotarian from Fairfax VA, and Tom Tikkanen’s guests, Elmore and Linda who are owners of Thimbleberry Press which publishes Further North Magazine and are involved with MainStreet Calumet.

President Tim displayed a photo of a CLK Junior Hockey team wearing CLK Rotary hockey sweaters. He also had 2 old hockey jerseys donated by Matt Vertin. Both sweaters had CLK Rotary on them. Inasmuch as the new jerseys do not have the CLK Rotary, these are real collectors items and will go into storage for display at a future date. Finally, Tim sent around a "Thank You" card from Mike Fouts, one of our scholarship recipients.

The next Rotary Board meeting will be Tuesday July 20 at 4 pm in the Range Bank conference room. All Board members should plan on attending.

Program: Kathy Johnson gave a very interesting program on the role of volunteers in the local hospice system. Hospice volunteer training will take place in mid-September, from 6:30 – 9 p.m. at Aspirus Keweenaw Home Nursing & Hospice. Kathy has the application forms that interested Rotarians need to complete.

Kathy made the point that hospice volunteers are bringing their personal touch to the patient and are there to help. Volunteers spend 2 hours per week and may be washing windows or talking with the patient. You may be giving the primary caregiver a respite. This is a very enriching experience for the volunteer. Kathy’s message: “Just bring yourself. The experience will be uplifting, rewarding, and personal.”

We extend a Big "Thank You" to Past President Jim Lowell who served the CLK Rotary Cub well as our President for the past year.

Our guests this week were Margaret Johnson, Kathy Johnson’s daughter, Bob Sharkey, and Dave and Linda Grahek. Welcome to all!

There were a lot of Happy Dollars and Announcements keeping Phil busy moving around the room collecting the money. Bob Sharkey reported from the International Meeting at Montreal, that Polio is on track for eradication by 2012. The number of remaining known polio cases has been cut in half.

We celebrated July birthdays for Jim Corless and Jeff Primeau.

Change in Officers: Rich Schaeffer resigned his post as Treasurer after a long period of service. President Tim accepted the resignation "with regret." The Club nominated and unanimously approved Sandy Huuki as our Treasurer.

Club attendance for May was 58%. We would like to see that number consistently higher.

No financial report as the past treasurer and incoming treasurer have not been able to meet.

Tamburitzans report: we have 6 weeks to sell tickets! Rotarians can obtain the ticket sales procedure and sales forms off our web site http://www.clkrotary.org/ Click on “Our Projects” and then on Tamburitzan Ticket Sale Procedures to look at or print the process for selling tickets. Click on Tambutizan Ticket Order Form to print the document you need to sell tickets. TICKET SALES GOAL: 75 per week for the Club. If Each Member Sells 16 tickets, we achieve our Club goal of 450. We are presuming the Calumet Theatre will sell 200 tickets. A total sales effort of 650 tickets will result in a very successful project! SO ….. please get Out And Sell Tickets!

The Tammie Committee will meet Tuesday July 13 at 4 p.m. at the Edward Jones office in Calumet.

President Tim announced the Rotary board is looking for ideas to fund with District Grant money. Any Rotarian who has an idea for a larger community project should contact President Tim.

CLK Rotary Board meetings will continue to be held the 3^rd Tuesday of each month at 4pm at the Range Bank office on Calumet avenue in the Conference Room. The next Board meeting will be July 20.

The 50/50 raffle was won by Captain Kilpela, a cool $55. Congrats!

President Jim Lowell’s last meeting as President. We meet next Wednesday with President Elect Tim Baroni conducting our meeting and for the next 12 months as well.

A variety of announcement & happy dollars were collected. Tom Scanlon paid his Happy $$ in foreign currency.

Bonnie Hay, representing the Gratiot Lake conservancy, delivered an interesting program showcasing the Gratiot Lake area. Much of what Bonnie presented is on the organizations web site www.miswa.org/gratiot-lake-1508/ The website includes a map with instructions on how to get to the Gratiot lake conservancy from US 41. Rotarians interested in driving to Gratiot Lake and seeing the area are encouraged to the check the website. Bonnie also suggested travel across the lake by boat to the access point. Visitors can hike, canoe or kayak. Winter visitors come by snowshoe.

The Conservancy is active in both conservation and education. The MTU summer youth program uses the J Bert Noblet cabin as a base to study water ecology. Local public schools also use the conservancy both for summer and winter camping and study.

Summer education programs include the Reading the Landscape. Additional information is available on the website listed above.

A very interesting program about a location many have never visited.

Welcome to the penultimate week of Jim Lowell's tenure as our president.

Our meeting today had 23 Rotarians and guests attending! A good crowd!

Guests: Dave and Linda Grahek; Katie Curtis, Aspirus Keweenaw Rehab & Fitness; Karen Kelly, RN Portage Health Dialysis: Jane Nordberg, Portage Health.

The meeting opened with a song (albeit a different song than our usual) and pledge followed by President Jim calling the meeting to order. First reading of Janice Torgeson Vivian as prospective member.

President Jim announced a change in the slate of incoming officers. Sandy Huuki, prospective Treasurer, has declined the position leaving the Treasurer position vacant. Rich Schaefer was nominated for Treasurer. Motion by Dalquist, second by Scanlon to elect Rich Schaefer as Secretary/Treasurer for the upcoming year. Motion passed unanimously.

CLK Rotary incoming officers are: Tim Baroni-President, Kathy Johnson-vice President, Rich Schaefer Secretary/Treasurer. President-elect Tim is also looking for Rotarians interested in participating as Board members. Please contact Tim Baroni if you are interested.

We collected multiple fines including a table fined for eating out of order.

Katie Curtis – Copperman Triathlong Organizing committee, asked the Club for Rotarians to help man the Esery park turn-around spot for the bike component of the Copperman. Katie needs 5-6 CLK Rotarians for this event – August 7. Several members signed up on the spot with more needed!

Program: Karen Kelly presented a request for Organ Donors. Portage Health has commited to recruit 400 organ donors this year. Donors need to register at a web site (www.giftoflifemichigan.org or at the Secretary of State. Karen cautioned the club to verify your registration on the web site listed above. The old system of signing the back of driver’s license is not official.

Michigan is 42^nd in the country for registered donors. The Michigan Hospital Association is working to change that. There are 3000 people in Michigan waiting for transplant and over 104,000 in the US. Karen reminded us that one body can supply more than 50 parts to recipients.

3> In the box “Where did you hear about organ donation?” select “Hospital”.

President Jim Lowell presented Scholarship checks to Tori Roose, our Lake Linden HS graduate who will attend Baker College to study as a Radiology Technician and Mike Fouts, CLK graduate attending the Powersport Institute of Ohio Tech College.

Our program featured Jeanette Polkinghorn and Lois Webber on a program called Simple Kindness for Youth (SKY). This program focuses on kids needs that are not being met through other programs. The example given was a child who wanted to join a swim team but whose parents could not afford to buy a swimming suit. SKY stepped in with a grant to buy the suit.

The program’s mission statement: To help young people build and maintain their self-esteem by providing means to access basic needs, enable them to feel accepted by their peers, and enable access to educational activities and community participation. Administration of the program is by SKY board members who are volunteers.

SKY Grants may not exceed $50 and are submitted by teachers, educational staff and other designated human services personnel. No other persons may submit applications for grants. The program focuses on youth in Houghton, Keweenaw and Baraga counties.

Inasmuch as Jim Lowell is approaching the end of his presidency I wanted to publish this picture of him taken at what must have been one of his proudest moments: presiding at the 60th anniversary of the CLK Rotary. Dressed for the occasion, Jim here displays a banner from the Killarney Club of Ireland.

Our meeting Wednesday again was sparse of members with only 13 in attendance, Thankfully 6 guests were there to fill up the tables somewhat. Guests were Marie Buche and Debbie Bradford from the Houghton Rotary, Dave and Linda Grahek who have returned for the summer, Betty Kilpela, and our speaker, Shawn Oppliger.

In last week's blog, Dan, wrote about the seriousness of the low membership attendance. Question: is this just an anomaly, some sort of ennui or torpor settling in temporarily or is it more or less the "way things will be" from now on. Only the membership can answer that and I for one hope that the rest of the month as well as next year is more characteristic of our usual commitment to the CLK Rotary.

Our guest speaker, Shawn Oppliger, is the Project Manager and School Coordinator for the Copper Country ISD and Western UP Center for Science, Math and Environmental Education. She gave a spirited and informative program about the school projects underway for the Lake Superior Stewardship Initiative. One is amazed at the quality of the projects selected both in doing some good for the area and in teaching the participants leadership and stewardship skills.

For example, the C-L-K Horizons High School has 43 students working on "developing and implementing a plan to make the Keweenaw Mountain Lodge golf course into an Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary and Habitat for birds and bats. Another example is the 45 students from the Lake Linden-Hubbell Middle School working as stewards of the shoreline of Torch lake's Adopt-a-Beach program. These are the other fine example of the LS Stewardship Initiative were presented as well.

Among others with June birthdays, June 9, was the birthday of our two oldest members, Joe Enrietti (85) and Capt Don (80). Joe is also our longest serving member. Joe showed me his orders for deployment on June 9, 1945 when he was deployed from Europe to the USA for a 30 day leave and later more training with the eventuality to be sent to the Pacific rim. Joe was a tail gunner on a B-25 in the Army Air Corps and is presently the only CLK Rotarian who served in World War II. Had the war not ended, Joe would have been assigned to a B-29 bomber.

Capt. Don served in the Korean Conflict as a sergeant in the Shore Patrol of the US Marine Corps but never made it to Korea. He spent his brief military career stationed in Coronado, California.

On behalf of all the June birthdays, Joe and Don presented a cake for our dessert and another round of "Happy Birthday" was rendered.

For our monthly Business meeting, the attendance was very light: 14 Rotarians, no guests! The above photo gives us the message: Rotary is about Attendance! We need to see CLK Rotarians weekly on Wednesday at the Irish Times. We all find times we cannot attend however the non-attendance needs to be the exception. So, please dedicate yourselves to look at your work calendar and try to set an appointment every Wednesday at 11:45 – 1: 15 to attend your Rotary Club meeting. We would love to see you there.

June birthdays: Sue Dana, Joe Enrietti, Don Kilpela, Jim Lowrie, Sandy Huuki and Tom Scanlon. Capt Don and Joe share the same birth date. A lusty song was rendered for the usual price.

Speaking of attendance, for the past month it was 58%; this can and should be improved. The moth did have some perfect attendees: Capt Don, Steve D, Phil S, Jim Lowell, Pete V and Dan D.

President Jim announced the June programs: June 9 will be Shawn Oppliger, June 16 will be our Scholarship award recipients, and June 23 is Portage Health organ donation program.

Club Finances: checkbook balance of $7572.21 and Savings of $4208.39 and all approved expenses have been paid. Joel estimated the Spaghetti Dinner netted the club approx $1,200.

Scholarship committee has chosen a CLK student and LL/Hubbell student. We expect to meet them at a noon meeting on Wed June 16.

Tamburitzans: Tickets are ready to sell. All CLK Rotary members need to be active in this project. The reality is the more tickets we (You and I) sell the more money the club makes. Selling 500 tickets nets us approx $1,779. Selling 600 tickets brings us almost $2,900. So….Buy tickets yourself! When was the last time you saw the Tammies?? Buy tickets for giveaway to a charity. Attendance: 17 Members and two guests

Guests today were Janice Vivian RN, Manager of the new Garden View Assisted Living and Memory Care center (the old Stillwaters facility is being completely renovated) and Matt Vertin, representing CLK Junior Hockey Association.

Announcements: Condolences were proffered to Joel Keranen and Patsi Bastian on the loss of their relative Jim Jukuri. Jim passed away last Friday, May 21. He was a past member of our Rotary Club. Also, President Jim announced that his brother-in-law had passed away recently from cancer. Our last announcement was Captain Don’s upcoming 80th birthday on June 09.

The program on the state of CLK Junior Hockey Association and sponsorships was presented by Matt Vertin. The hockey program has continued to evolve in difficulty as families have had to deal with increased expenses and the desire to have a common hockey identity or brand. Unlike the past, all teams in the CLK Junior Hockey Association are known as the "Calumet Ice Kings" and all wear same jersey.

Participants pay between $300 - $400 registration fee per year. Other expenses include travel, equipment, ice rental, etc., a daunting challenge, so sponsors are needed to help underwrite expenses.

The CLK Rotary has sponsored a team for many years, in the Bantams level. Our sponsorship has been in the $200 - $300 range. Our sponsorship was partly used to pay the costs of CLK Rotary Jerseys.

As teams participate in tournaments and travel, the need for a common identity had become apparent. The Association decided to establish the Calumet Ice Kings as the brand name. New jerseys were supplies to all players. Team jerseys displaying the sponsor's name on the front have stopped although sponsors, such as CLK Rotary, will still sponsor specific teams and will be recognized as sponsors in schedules, tournaments and announcements.

Matt addressed questions from the group after his presentation. He did say he thought he might know where an old CLK jr hockey jersey is located that may be obtained by our Club for display.

Attendance: 20 Rotarians and six guests: George Twardzik, Principal, CLK High School; Chris Davidson, Horizon’s School; Dave Hein, CLK Schools; Barbara Jones, Lake Linden/Hubbell Schools; and Craig Sutherland, Superintendant, LL/Hubbell Schools. In addition, Bob Sharkey, our ADG and District Governor-elect joined us.

President Jim called the meeting to order, introduced the guests, and then announced that the Board Meeting has been re-scheduled to Wed may 26 at 4 p.m. in the River Valley Bank conference room, Calumet.

After lunch, President Jim introduced the Rotary program, CHOICES. This program was presented to 9th grade students in the CLK, Horizons, and Lake Linden/Hubbell Schools. CLK Rotary members who worked as the instructional teams were Jim Lowell, Tom Tikkanen, Kathy Johnson, Kevin Store, and Keith Stenger.

Each group presented a one-hour program to a class followed by another hour the next day. There were two classes presented at the Lake Linden/Hubbell schools, three classes at CLK and one class at Horizons.

The CHOICES program helps students identify choices they will have to make in terms of Self Discipline, Time Management and Money Management. As students work through the program they discover consequences (both good and bad) for making certain choices.

As we moved through the condensed CHOICES program, Jim Lowell (with the help of Tom Tikkanen) displayed a Time-line chart that demonstrated the long-term effect of one's choices, a very effective visual presentation.

As part of the presentation, the school administrators who were present gave positive comments. One recurring theme was: "Nice to have the message comes from community members as opposed to the teachers as it might carry a little more weight."

At the conclusion of each "Choices" class, the Key to Success was presented to each student participating, a small token reminder of their "choices."

Before adjourning, President-elect Tim Baroni extended an invitation to the school administrators to join CLK Rotary.

President Jim announced programs for the next couple weeks> May 19, CHOICES program with guests from LL/Hubbell and CLK Schools. May 26, Matt Vertin on CLK Junior Hockey.

Today's program featured both Chuck Nelson and Scot Gavaret. Chuck called his presentation, "The Changing Spectrum of Health Care in the U.P." With its acquisition of the Ontonagon hospital and partnership with Keweenaw, Aspirus Health system has invested over $20 million dollars in the western UP. This investment has helped 800 employees working in 5 counties of the UP. The total payroll is $25 million.
Chuck stressed the Aspirus was invited to the UP as opposed to making a strategic move.

Scot's presentation focused on the New Level of Choice for Cardiac Care in Houghton, Keweenaw, and Ontonagon counties. The Aspirus Cardiac and Vascular institute is up and running with a cardiologist on staff at Aspirus Keweenaw.

In general, Aspirus health system is an integrated system. The system operates a hospital in Wausau plus 4 critical access hospitals (including Keweenaw) and a number of clinics. Their mottos is: "Passion for Excellence and Compassion for People."

Aspirus has received a number of awards including top 50 ranking as a hospital and several other top ratings by industry publications.

A very inspired and inspiring presentation. See you Wednesday.

Welcome back to Capt Don (we missed you) and today, May 5, is Cinco de Mayo day. Those first two comments generated some discussion.

Then Jim reminded us that the district region conference is May 14 - 15 at Eagle River WI. Though it is the last minute, CLK Rotarians are encouraged to attend.

There were no birthdays this month. We need to recruit new members with May birthdates.

President Jim presented a list of donation request that had been received. The Board recommended $100 for Chamber membership. A motion was made and passed to pay no more than $500 for the CLK JROTC program request. This motion was tabled. All other requests were denied at this time.

Next board meeting is May 18 at 4pm at Range Bank on Calumet Ave. Officers are reminded to attend.

A Correction: Last week we mistakenly listed Babette Jokela and Frank Fiala as “guests” in the March 17 blog. As we all know, both Babette & Frank are members of CLK Rotary. Our sincere apology to both Babette & Frank.

Today, we had 25 Rotarians and guests attending this meeting. Guests were Major Mike Farley – Public Schools of Calumet JROTC program and three very impressive JROTC cadets: Cadet Captain Kelsey Coo, Cadet Lieutenant Rochelle Harris and Cadet Sergeant Joe Collen.

Announcements:

New CLK Rotary member Laura Miller – Exec Director of the Calumet Theatre, was inducted to our Club. Welcome Laura. [Ed: I am sure they were happier than they looked]

Jim Corless stated that the KNHP Has received some exhibits for the Union building but needs more. Interested Rotarians should contact Jim at the Keweenaw National Historic Park office in Calumet.

Second meeting in a row without Andy?

Program:

Major Mike Farley began the program by describing the JROTC program that he administers as a citizenship and service program. Participating schools include Calumet-Laurium-Keweenaw and Lake Linden-Hubbell and the Horizon schools. The local JROTC program was established in 1917 and will be celebrating its centennial in 2017. The program focuses upon service, physical fitness, leadership skills. It develops character and provides the students exposure to people outside the UP, to new ideas.

Our support of RYLA has helped by sending JROTC students to the annual RYLA program in Wisconsin for which Major Farley thanked CLK Rotary for the continued support of RYLA and the JROTC program

Recently, the JROTC cadets competed against 2000 other units in Leadership and Academic Bowl competition from other states. While the initial level of competition was 2000 units from across the country, Level 2 had considerable less. Michigan had 50 units in the competition and the CLK Students, along with the other 2 JROTC units in the UP, qualified for Level 2. Calumet ended 3rd out of 119 units.

This summer, Major Farley is taking 9 students and 1 adult to a JROTC Camp in Germany. The trip will include some sightseeing and participating in a variety of competitions. They will be staying at a German military base and interact with students from several other European countries.

This trip will cost $1895 per person. Funds have been raised through a variety of activities with the big one being a spaghetti dinner and auction. If the group does not raise all the money then families will need to step in. Rotarians are urged to support the dinner. President Jim asked Major Farley to complete a Request for Donation so the Rotary board could consider helping with the funding.

A big crowd today! 26 Rotarians and guests enjoyed a Corned Beef & Cabbage lunch at the Irish Times.

Guests included Tom Casperson-running for 38th District Senate; Paul Lehto-Calumet township Supervisor; Bob DuPont, Main St Calumet member; Frank Fiala, Main Street Board President; Bob Sharkey, our Assistant District Governor; Babette Jokela, Main Street supporter; and Donna Cole, Hancock Rotary Club.

Announcements:

1. Thanks to the organizers of the Copper Dog 150 and all the volunteers.

2. The Calumet Theatre is holding its gala fund-raising dinner on Saturday March 20. Interested Rotarians are urged to attend.

3. And a St Patrick’s Day luncheon without Andy Murtagh present? [Kilpela adds, I believe Andy is of Scotch descent]

Our program was two parts. We started with a review of the Club budget and then Sue Dana presented a request for a contribution to Main Street Calumet.

First: President Jim Lowell reported on the budget and thoughts of the Board when considering donation requests. Highlights are:

1. Overall annual budget is roughly balanced at about $25,000

2. Eliminate the “pass through” money consisting of meals, dues, and the Rotary Foundation, and the remaining budget has a slight surplus at approximately $10,000 that includes limited discretional funds of approximately $1,000.

3. The Balance Sheet shows a balance in checking and savings of approximately $10,000. Note, however, that it includes some Spaghetti Dinner revenue and none of the applicable expenses. Moreover, it includes $1000 scholarship money to be dispensed in May.

4. Current pending requests for donation total approximately $6,000. Little of this will fit into annual budget.

5. Board priorities when considering whether to recommend granting request include:

a) Geography. Priority to money which benefits persons in CLK Rotary area, that is, the north end of Houghton county and all of Keweenaw County.

b) “Warm Body” factor, that we can identify the person(s) who will ultimately benefit from donation.

Following a review of the budget and donation policy, Sue Dana presented Main Street Calumet’s request for a funding of $1000 per year for the next three years, a total of $3,000.. She listed the accomplishments of Main Street Calumet such as instigating the Copper Dog 150, of facade improvements, of encouraging and supporting new businesses as well as community events. She reminded members that any person or business can become a Main Street member, that you do not have to be in the Main Street district. However, it is important to note that money spent in the Main Street district floats through the entire community, a benefit to all either directly or indirectly.

Bottom line is Main Street Calumet needs help with its funding. Frank Fiala, Main Street Board President, gave a passionate argument supporting Main Street Calumet. He has a strong belief in Calumet and has located his business in town. Frank talked about the impact of Main Street throughout the Keweenaw.

Many questions & concerns were voiced by Rotarians. Issues such as keeping a prudent bank balance, a desire to support Calumet as well as the rest of our market area, donating to general funds vs helping to meet a specific need, were addressed. I could not write fast enough to record all the comments!

The discussion came to an end when a vote was called on the question of supporting the Main Street Calumet request to fund $1000 per year for the nest three years. That vote passed 14 Yea and 6 Nay.

18 Rotarians & guests attended today. Kathy Johnson was the proud host of her husband, buzz, and their daughter, Regina. Buzz & Regina delivered the program after lunch.

Several Happy $$ were collected as well as several announcements:

President Jim and Tim Baroni gave an update on the Spaghetti Dinner plans: We had amended the serving time from 4pm- 8pm to 1pm - 8pm in order to accommodate the Copper dog 150 racers . We sold 55 tickets at the door for that even! The works shifts were reviewed with a team of 5 doing setup on Thursday, a team of 9 covering the first shift on Friday (12 - 5) and a similar number expected for cleanup. Rotarians were reminded to bring desserts and the selections were amazing.

After lunch, Buzz & Regina Johnson gave a presentation on their new business: Snow country Greenhouse. They have developed a greenhouse that will stand up to the Keweenaw winters and snow cover without collapsing. SnowCountry Greenhouse offers various pre-set size products as well as the capability to customize to your specifications. Construction is with Western Cedar and 8mm thick polycarbonate that provides the light transition efficiency of a single pane window. Purchasers need to provide their own foundation so the structure can be properly anchored.

Buzz got into this business due to a long family history of gardening. The greenhouse design is estimated to add 1 month to the start of the growing season and extend the end by 1 and a half months. In other words, a potential 8 month season.

We had 22 CLK Rotarians attending and no guests.

Happy Dollars were collected from Tom T, Andy, and Pastor Pete (Pete skied his 18th Birkibeiner Ski Race of 50km this past weekend). We also celebrated 1 birthday this month – Andy Murtagh. We sang Happy birthday in both English and Canadian.

President Jim announced that 6 members had perfect attendance for Feb and the Club attendance reached 61%. He appreciates the makeups he has received. The makeup, he noted, helps with the Club’s attendance.

Treasurer Joel announced the Club’s checking balance = $4689.22 and Savings =$195.46. All known bills have been paid.

SPAGHETTI DINNER IS FRIDAY MARCH 12! We will be serving from 1pm to 8pm on Friday March 12 at the Irish Times. The Copper Dog 150 racers will be drawing for starting positions at the Irish Times on that date and we will be feeding them and serving from 1pm – 8pm. Workers will be in 2 shifts: Shift 1 is from 12 noon to 5pm and we have 7 of the 10 Rotarians we need for this shift. Shift 2 is from 5pm – 9pm and 10 Rotarians are needed. Please notify Kevin Store or Tim Baroni for your work preference.

Baked goods and desserts are needed! A request to all our Rotarians: Please bring a dessert to the dinner. It is best to bring things like cookies or bars that are easy to serve. Bring your dessert to the Irish Times when you come to work your shift.

President Jim announced the Board had received several requests for donations including Little Brothers, Boy Scouts, Bay Cliff and Main Street Calumet. Several of the requests were submitted by form letter with no specific information resulting in the Board’s decision to not fund those particular requests.

Sue Dana asked for time at a future CLK Membership meeting to give a presentation on main Street Calumet. That meeting date will be in 2 weeks.

President Jim reminded the membership that Board meetings are held at Range Bank in Calumet at 4pm on the 3rd Tuesday of each month. Board meetings are open to the membership.

Our guest today was Bob Sharkey – Houghton Rotary. Bob is our current Assistant Dist governor. Bob announced the 2013 Rotary District conference would be held in Houghton. He hoped all the local clubs would work together to host the event.

President Jim read Laura Miller’s name for the 3rd time – a potential new member.

Each Rotarian was issued 8 spaghetti dinner tickets to sell or pay for. The Community Dinner is Friday March 12 at the Irish Times. The committee expects all CLK Rotarians to help with the event. A work schedule is forthcoming. Rotarians who were not at the meeting will be issued tickets by Kevin Store or other members of the committee. Tom Tikkanen asked the club to consider starting the dinner at 1pm on March 12. The Copper Dog racers have a bib draw for the starting order on Friday afternoon. That event is followed by a dinner. The opportunity for CLK Rotary is to have another 100 or more dinner tickets sold by providing the dinner. President Jim said he would check with the committee and respond to Tom by Thursday Feb 25.

Tim Baroni presented the program. Tim gave background info to the past several years of bank industry problems focusing upon the mortgage industry. This problem started with the Clinton administration committing to increasing home ownership. That effort resulted in loosening credit requirements and underwriting. Banks were accepting more risk in the loans and sold the loans to a variety of end purchasers including Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac. As the economy slowed, the borrowers were unable to make pmts or sell homes which resulted in defaults and the rest is history. Many of the Rotarians present asked questions or made statements about the problems the country experienced. Tim was passionate about the topic and well informed. He stressed the local banks were making loans and had few problems compared t0 many other regions of the country.

This was a very good presentation.

Present were 17 Rotarians and 1 guest at our Wednesday luncheon. After President Jim called the meeting to order, he introduced Renee Marion. Renee was a guest of Keith Stenger and was our program speaker. President Jim announced Laura Miller as a prospective Rotary member. This was the 2^nd reading.

I looked around the meeting room and realized Rotarian Andy Murtagh was absent. There was some speculation among several Rotarians that Andy had gone to Vancouver for the Olympics. Time will tell.

Announcements: CLK Rotary extended condolences to Joe Enrietti at the death of his brother John. We are all thinking of you Joe.

Program: Renee Marion, Goodwill Industries Workforce Development, updated the Club on the activities that Goodwill Industries provide in addition to the well-known retail stores. G.I. merged with Vocational Strategies Inc (VSI) several years ago and now the entire operation is called Goodwill Industries. VSI was already known for its Vocational Wood Shop and document shredding so in addition to that operation, G.I. offers general cleaning services and lawn care services.

Goodwill Industries is organized into Community Programs and Community Services. Both are available at the local facility. The agency does operate on a business model as a non-profit.

Funding is provided by referring agencies like Michigan Rehab, the ISD and Copper Country Mental Health, etc. The Community services side contributes profits from contracting its many services.

This week’s meeting was attended by 17 CLK Rotarians, 1 CLK Rotary Alumni, and 3 guests. Our Guests were Jim and Agnes Countryman from Ontonagon and Judy Syzykoski from Chassell. Jim is a director of the Copper Country Farm Bureau and Judy is also a board member. Jim presented the program. Our Alumni vistor was Ed Yarbrough.

First, President Jim announced the Hancock Rotary Club was hosting Mr Jim Herlache on April 26 at the Finnish American Center in Hancock. Jim, a Rotarian from Wisconsin, will be giving a presentation on Power Flour. President Jim asked if the Club was in favor of canceling our Wednesday meeting on April 28 in lieu of attending the April 26 regular luncheon. The CLK Club voted to stay on our Wednesday schedule. CLK Rotarians, however, are encouraged to attend the Monday April 26 lunch meeting. Moreover, it could also be a makeup meeting for those who need one.

Next, Jim countryman was introduced to give the presentation. He is the current Ontonagon Rotary president and a director of the CC Farm Bureau. Jim and his wife, Agnes, are a beef cattle farmers owning Toll-Free farms. Jim talked about the Miracle of Modern Farming. The following points were made:

1. Farming was all organic until the early 1940’s. Farmers were dependant upon Nature to give the proper soil, water and weather. Bad crops meant the farmer and his customers were going to bed hungry.

2. Today, 2% of our labor force supplies the food to our country.

3. Farming also produces the crops that are used for producing medicine, clothing, and many of our consumable products.

4. The Miracle of Hybrid seeds (genetic alterations) has given farmers the ability to increase the yield per acre and find seed that will prosper in traditionally difficult growing climates. In 1940 the average acre of yielded 20 bushels whereas in 2009, that yield was 166 bushels per acre with a record high quantity of 300 bushels per acre. This is all thea result of hybrid seeds and modern famring techniques.

John and Agnes also Registered Irish Dexter cattle. The cattle are bred for tender beef and are raised without use of chemicals. John does sell the meat either by the pound or by the quarter. Rotarians interested in purchasing beef raised in Ontonagon can call John at 906-884-2351.

Seventeen Rotarians and 2 guests attended. Guests included Bob Sharkey – Houghton and Donna Cole-Hancock.

Several members produced Happy Dollars. Jim Lowell gave thanks for the CLK Rotary CHOICES team for their efforts at the CLK Schools. The team includes Tom Tikkanen, Keith Stenger, Kevin Store, Kathy Johnson and Jim Lowell. Great Work folks!

Financial Report: Club checking & savings acct balance is $8863.40 and all know expenses are paid.

Comment from Amy Roberts regarding the contributions from the Top 5 clubs to Rotary International: Make a separate check payable to the Rotary Foundation and mail it to Amy c/o Superior National Bank. That method is preferred . An alternate method is pay the quarterly charge of $50 with your dues. The Club Treasurer and Amy will then ensure the $$ flows to the proper location. Remember, contributions to the Foundation may be tax deductible to the donor.

Motion by Andy Murtagh , support by Sue Dana, to spend $1000 from savings to combine with the Houghton Club $ to jointly buy a Shelter Box for the people in Haiti. Several discussion points were raised by various members. The Motion was defeated YEA=7 and NAY = 9.

Comment from a member asking the Club to check on which organization to contribute $ to the Haiti relief project.

Donna Cole – Hancock Rotary, gave a brief presentation on the Etta Project. More info is on the District website. The basic issue is to help provide clean drinking water to remote villages in Bolivia. This project also partners withthe Engineers without Borders program – a program that is active at MTU. Donna asked CLK Rotary to consider a contribution of $250. Motion by Sue Dana/supported by Tom. Yea=7 and NAY=5. Motion passed. Our $ will be matched with the $ from Hancock

President Jim won the 50/50.

(With spring training almost upon us, I thought it might be nice to remind everyone that the "boys of summer" are heading south...besides, I am in Chicago without my Rotary pictures. The pitcher is young Rick Portcello throwing the first pitch of the 2009 season to a member of the NY Mets in Port St. Lucie, Florida.)

Twenty Rotarians were present and Mike Agin, Exec Director of Little Brothers, who was our program guest for the meeting.

After Happy Dollars and fines were paid, President Jim introduced Mike Agin for the program.

Mike began by thanking CLK Rotary for sponsoring his daughter, Hannah, as an exchange student. Hannah spent 1 yr in Poland. She is now attending school In Iowa and making the effort to keep her Polish language skills current.

Mike focused upon the Firewood Program operated by Little Brothers. This program provides split firewood for 81 seniors in the 2 county area. Little Brothers gets volunteer help from Michigan Tech fraternities, church groups, Rockhurst University in Kansas, and a group from Traverse City MI. The volunteers cut, split, stack and help deliver the firewood to needy clients.

Firewood is either purchased by Little Brothers or donated. This year, Camp Kitwen in Painesdale was closed leaving several hundred cords of firewood. The prison system donated 100 cords to Little Brothers. With help from local contractors, the 100 cords was moved to the 2 lots Little Brothers uses for cutting & storage.

This is a big undertaking. The senior citizens cannot afford gas/oil/ electric heat so the firewood helps to keep their expenses down while keeping the house warm. To accomplish this enormous task, Little Brothers maintains an inventory of 12 chainsaws, 3 hydraulic splitters, 15 splitting mauls and a variety of other tools.

After Mike fielded several questions from members, President Jim presented him with a check from CLK Rotary as a donation from our club.

We walked into the meeting room to see round tables. A nice change!

Eighteen Rotarians and 1 guest attended this meeting. The guest, Brian Tiura, is the chairperson of the Copper Dog 150 sled dog race.
Brian gave the Club a briefing on the plans for the Copper Dog 150. The event is scheduled for Friday march 12 – Sunday March 14. This is the same weekend as the Great Bear Chase. Calumet –Laurium will be very busy that weekend.

Mushers (drivers of the dog sled) driving 10-dog sleds will leave Calumet Friday evening and race up to Phoenix and then to Gay. After a 5 hour rest stop at Gay, sled teams head north to Copper Harbor where they will spend Saturday evening. Sunday morning the racers head back to Calumet to finish on the snow covered streets!

Racers who want a shorter course for teams with 6 dogs will find a race from Calumet to Hancock and back.

The race route will use existing snowmobile trails. Organizers are working with the trail groups to warn snowmobiles to keep away from the trails for that weekend. Brian suggested Rotarians look at the www.copperdog 150.com web site for more details including a route map. He did say the Race needs volunteers – both skilled and unskilled. So…if we have Rotarians who want to help with the race, please go to the web site mentioned above to register as a volunteer.

A question was asked about prize money- first prize for the Pro division is $3500 with the top 10 finishers all receiving some sort of payout. Brian clarified that registration fees are paying the prize money while donations and contributions from the local community are staying here – not being used for prize money.

This was a very interesting program delivered by a highly energetic individual with a ton of enthusiasm.

Prior to the program, the members had a brief discussion about supporting the Haiti relief process by either buying a Shelter box (est cost $1000) or partnering with the Hancock & Houghton clubs to buy shelter boxes. The matter was directed to the board.

60th Anniversary Luncheon, January 13, 2010

Welcome to the 60^th Birthday of CLK Rotary!

Today we met in the main dining room of the Irish Times due to 34 members & guests attending the meeting. Guests included Bob Sharkey-Ass’t Dist Gov., Lorraine Zeigler, Donna Cole and Ethan Johnson-Hancock Rotary, Randy & Gail Roberts , Marilyn Murtagh, Betty Kilpela, Joy Liljegren, Linda Lowell and Frank Fiala. What a crew!

The Irish Times did a great job serving a roast beef luncheon.

After lunch, Amy Roberts-our Rotary Foundation Chair, presented several Paul Harris Fellow awards. The recipients were Andy Murtagh (his second award) and Kevin Store. Andy presented his award to Marilyn Murtagh. Amy Roberts received her Paul Harris from her participation in the Hancock Club’s (her prior club) Top 5 Club. Amy presented her award to her Mother-in-law Gail Niemela Roberts. All three new Paul Harris recipients received a round of applause.

Our next activity was a group singing of Happy Birthday to CLK Rotary followed by cutting of the birthday cake.

President Jim gave the floor to Donna Cole – Hancock Rotary. Donna presented a Rotary banner to CLK Rotary from the Rotary club of Kilarney Ireland – very appropriate as CLK meets in the Irish Times.

Joe Enrietti, who joined CLK Rotary in 1973, took the floor. Joe described the process used to nominate new members when he joined. At that time, any member could “blackball” a nominee. This effectively blocked the nominee from becoming a Rotary member. The process included placing a black ball into a container. The black ball was the veto.

Joe also described several of the Club’s meeting places . We understand the first meeting place for CLK Rotary was what is now the Irish Times! The Club also met at the Red Garter (burned down years ago) and the Miscowabik Club.

We look forward to another successful 60 yrs of service to our Community and the world through Rotary.

Business Meeting, January 6, 2010

(President Jim congratulates Jim Corless of the Keweenaw National Historic Park on being elected a member of the CLK Rotary Club. The members add their congratulations and welcome as well.)

The meeting was attended by 18 members – if you count Jim Corless, who was inducted during the meeting and Don Kilpela, who arrived late due to mechanical challenges with his car.

Jim Corless was welcomed into the Club. Jim is Superintendent of the Keweenaw National Historical Park. He followed the induction with a short introduction. During his career he has been posted at a number of National Parks> Though he has had previous contact with Rotary, until today he has not been a member. He has a comfortable Victorian home in Laurium and is pleased to be a part of our community.

Attendance for December was 60%, a nice improvement. We can do better. Counting today's new member, Jim Corless, the CLK Rotary has 29 members. New member roster Emailed today.

Lahti/Keweenaw County-No Kid Without a Christmas: CLK Rotary donated $1,020.00. The gifts were sorted by An dy, Amy, Jim, Tom Scanlan, Dick, and Tom Liljigren.

Our last Rotary Meeting of the Year.

We had one guest, Jim Wollan, from Washburn, Wisconsin, a former resident of Calumet and Lake Linden. A total of 18 Rotarians including our guest were present.

President Lowell called the meeting to order. After lunch, several members donated Happy Dollars. Moreover, some members were fined a dollar for not signing in as they arrived (see picture below).

Our program was presented by President Jim as a DVD show about various functions that are funded and sponsored by the Rotary International Foundation (RIF), projects such as Polio Plus, the massive effort to eradicate the polio virus throughout the world. The more we learn about RIF and it many projects, the more impressed we become.

The CLK Rotary Club has given $30,000 to the Foundation over the years. Presently, we have two 5x5 teams. A 5x5 Team is comprised of five members who pledge to donate $1000 over a 5-year period and at the end of each year one of the five members will be selected to receive a Paul Harris Fellowship. This year, our two teams will each award a fellowship at our 60th birthday party luncheon on January 13, 2010.

A small but lively group today!

We welcomed Holly Crouch and her daughter Hailey and friend Craig Koskela as guests as well as Zak Tervo. Both Holly and Zak were the Club’s Scholarship recipients and were present to tell the Club about their experiences.

Pastor Pete helped open the meeting by introducing himself as Pastor Grinch. Several Happy Dollars were collected in a Festive manner.

Zak Tervo is attending Diesel Mechanics school in Chicago. He is doing well. Grades are good and he is enthusiastically learning his trade. He has completed his 6th course and is currently enjoying an electronics course. Zak is scheduled to complete his schooling by July, however is looking at the possibility of accelerating the program and finishing in March. He has a job upon graduation. Zak is focused. He announced he expects to earn his Master Mechanics license within 4 yrs of completing school. This certification will require Zak to continue his certification exams and get work experience. It was great to see his excitement.

Holly Crouch is attending Finlandia University pursuing a degree in Graphic Design. Holly has completed her 1st semester and is pursuing a 4 yr Bachelors degree. Her curriculum is exposing her to a variety of people including students and faculty from the Lower Peninsula and other countries. Her favorite course so far has been a drawing class. Holly’s graduation plans are abstract since she has 7 more semesters to complete.

She has already been exposed to a variety of artistic media including fabrics,, computer design and ceramics.

Amy Roberts gave a brief report on the Foundation including plans to present two Paul Harris Fellowships on Jan 13 2010.

Dan Dalquist reminded the Club that the 60th birthday party is January 13, 2010. The celebration will be held at our regular meeting date, time, and location. It would be great to have ALL our members present at this special meeting. As part of the discussion regarding the 60th party, Joe Enrietti announced he joined the Club in 1973. He is our member with the most Seniority.

(Since heavy snow in the Harbor prevented our getting a photograph of this year's luminaries, here is a picture, taken last year, of the moving CLK Rotary tribute to the 73 men, women and children who lost their lives in the Italian Hall disaster on December 24, 1913.)

December 9, 2009 Meeting:

President Jim Lowell called the meeting to order and introduced Sgt Frank Philips – CLK ROTC and Linda Grahek (Dave was out of town) . Sgt Philips was accompanied by two ROTC Cadets: Rochelle Miller – Junior at CLK High School and Katie Miller – Junior at Lake Linden Hubbell high school. Jim then read the names of two prospective members: Scott See and Keith Stenger.

After our meal and Happy Dollars from 5 Rotarians, Sgt Philips took the floor. He explained the CLK ROTC program had nominated students for the annual RYLA training every years for the past 12 yrs. CLK Rotary sponsors this program at $250 per student per year.

RYLA students attend a weekend Leadership training program at Camp Manito-Wish in Wisconsin. Students experience a variety of leadership development skills including a variety of team-building games and a high ropes course!

The girls described their experience as “Amazing!”. Both have been asked to return next year as instructors at RYLA. Katie and Rochelle said they use the leadership skills in their daily activities with ROTC.

CLK Rotary should be proud of our continued sponsorship of such a worthy program.

December 16, 2009 Meeting:

We had a Full House at this meeting! Twenty Two Rotarians and guests enjoyed a good lunch and program. Guests included Dave & Linda Grahek (we ALL thought they had left last week!) and Pam Grill – Main Street Calumet Board member.

Tom and Sue Scanlan were welcomed back home.

Announcements included Andy Murtagh modeling his Canadian Air Force hockey jersey.

Pam Grill reported on the accomplishments and status of the Calumet Main Street organization. Main St is an organization that is administered in Michigan by MSHDA. Main Street states it has the formula for creating a viable and functioning downtown for a community. She gave several examples of downtowns that have been recovered and are providing economic growth – including Calumet.

Several key points include comparing our Keweenaw National Historical Park (KNHP) to other national landmarks such as Harper’s Ferry, Lowell Massachusets and Valley Forge! We do have many things to be proud of in Calumet, Laurium, and Keweenaw.

The Main Street organization was started in 1980 and now numbers over 2000 communities. Calumet was selected as a Main Street community in 2003. The focus is on the historic district of Calumet with efforts to improve economic gains, renovate properties, sponsor events, and other activities. For example, from June 2005 through May 2008, Calumet Main St attracted 9 new businesses resulting in 45 new jobs.

CLK Rotary made a three-year commitment of money to help Main Street get on it’s feet in the early years. As then, Main Street needs help with it’s funding. Support can be provided by becoming a Main Street member, by volunteering for various committees or events, or by making a contribution directly to Main Street.

The meeting was (relatively) well attended with guests David and Linda Grahek, Bob Sharkey and a blast from our past, Ed Yarbrough in addition to 20 members. Everyone was pleased to see Kevin Store upright and functional again. Kevin thanked members for their thoughts and prayers during his convalescence.

Motion: The Board of Directors is authorized to spend as they see fit for the 60th celebration. Due to the short time-frame involved, a quorum is not required to approve expenditures. Andy M./Sandy H. Approved.

Motion: We will invite past Club officers to lunch on January 13th at our expense. Sue. D/Jim Lowrie. Approved.

The next Board meeting will be on December 15th at Range Bank in Calumet.

A” Deer Season” meeting! We had 15 members, including guests Dave & Linda Grahek, attend lunch. President Jim introduced guest Rebecca Crane – Executive Director of DIAL HELP. Rebecca will deliver the program.

Names of potential members were read: Jeff Slivkoff (3^rd reading) and Jim Corliss (2^nd reading).

Announcements included: 1. CLK Rotarians have raised over $500 for The Keweenaw County Sheriff Secret Santa! That, coupled with the $500 from the club itself makes for a $1,000 donation to brighten the Christmas for a whole lot of kids. What a Great Club we have! 2. A Board meeting will be Tuesday Dec 1 at 4pm at the Range Bank office in Calumet.

Captain Don Kilpela announced he and Betty were celebrating their 57^th yr of Marriage. Congratulations to both Betty and Don!

Our Program today is about DIAL HELP. Rebecca Crane, has been the Exec Director since June 2009. DIAL HELP began 30 yrs ago as a help line for drug abuse. It has evolved to a crisis line serving all of the UP. The next closest crisis line is Traverse City. There are a few others in the Lower Peninsula. DIAL HELP’s mission is to provide crisis help ( drug abuse, alcohol abuse, victim services and prevention programs in addition to other services) 24 hrs per day 7 days per week.

The organization is funded by grants from both the Federal and state governments as well as money from both the Copper Country and Dickinson County United Way chapters. Annual budget is $350,000 with 90% funded by grants and federal/state agencies. The remaining 10% comes from donations.

DIAL HELP needs volunteers to help deliver its various programs. If any Rotarians are interested, they should contact Rebecca Crane at DIAL HELP.

First, my apologies to President Jim. Somehow, during our travels, I missed the email with the report that is going to follow. Though it is late, I hope it will serve as a reminder of tomorrow's meeting and will bring you up to date with what transpired last week.

15 Rotarians, including David and Linda Grahek attended lunch today. Laura Shudra, of Authentic Truths, was our guest and presenter. Prior to lunch Lowell welcomed guests and delivered a message from Kevin Store, thanking members for thinking of him during his time in the hospital with H1N1 and pneumonia.

After lunch, Lowell made a few announcements, including reading the names of prospective new members Jeff Slivkoff (De la Terre) and Jim Corless (Keweenaw National Historical Park). Amy Roberts drew names to see who would be the Paul Harris Fellows from the 5x5 teams and solicited names for other Paul Harris Fellowships to be presented at the 60th birthday party on January 16th. The meeting was then turned over to Laura Shudra.

Shudra is an experienced teacher and councilor who is forming a company to council anyone in need of support or direction. She emphasizes effective decision making, team leadership and choosing mentors. One aim is to help teens identify their callings and to avoid problems resulting from bad relationships.

Tom Tikkanen donated a happy dollar in anticipation of bagging an 8-point buck. We look forward to hearing about this at a future meeting.

We all wish Kevin a quick return to health! > No program today so we will resume/complete last week’s business meeting. (Did the agenda come to the meeting this week?)

Capt Kilpela gave several Happy Dollars as he reported that Tom Scanlon is recovering from his surgery.

New Member: President Jim inducted Scott See (sponsored by Sue Dana) as our newest Rotarian. Welcome Scott! Jim also read Jeff Slivkoff’s name for the first time – a potential member. Jeff is the General Manger of the De La Terre restaurant in Lake Linden.

Birthdays: Joel keranen, Amy Roberts (plus today is her youngest child’s birthdate!), Phil Smythe and Babette Jokela.

CLK Rotarians w/perfect attendance in October were: Patsi, Dan, Sue Dana, Joe Enrietti, Joel, Tom L, Jim Lowell, Rich S, Andy, Phil and Peter Vorheis. Club attendance was 57%. Congratulations to our Perfect Attendance members!

2: CHOICES program will be presented at Lake Linden Hubbell Schools – 9^th grade classes on 11/30 and 12/1. Calumet Schools will be 12/7 & 12/8. Could use more Rotarians for the Calumet Schools dates.

3: A letter request from Zack Tervo – one of our scholarship recipients was read. Zack is doing well in school and plans on completing his program in June 2010. He is planning on returning to the area and opening a repair facility in the area. Very good feedback from Zack. Our Scholarship $$ are making a difference. Motion by Tim Baroni, Second by Amy Roberts to immediately pay the second installment of the scholarship. Motion passed.

4: No Board meeting in November due to conflicting activities & events. The Board will meet once all members return from deer camp and the hospital!

5: Phil has an updated member roster that Jim Lowell will email to all Rotarians.

6: The CLK Rotary Sheriff’s fund is now at $500 (member donations ) and still rising! A big thanks to those Rotarians who have donated to this worthy cause.

CLK Rotary Meeting Oct 28 2009 A Call to Action!

Special Thank You to Lisa Ronan – Irish Times owner – for her stellar work decorating the bar/restaurant for Halloween! We arrived to find spider webs, spiders , mummies and moss all over the place!

Guests included Linda Grahek (without Dave), Scott See, chuck Wicker –Hancock Rotary and Keweenaw County Sheriff Ron Lahti.

Attendance = 20.

Sheriff Lahti presented our program. He explained how the “Secret Santa” program conducted by the Keweenaw county sheriff’s dept worked. The program started 12 yrs ago when it became apparent there were children in Keweenaw County that were not getting Christmas Gifts. Names, along with ages & gender & sizes, were provided by various sources including community members and the Social Services dept.
Last year, the program operated with an $8000 budget and produced Christmas gifts for 79 children! Sheriff Lahti and staff members from the Keweenaw County courthouse spent over 12 hours shopping for the gifts.

Sheriff Lahti said he does negotiate discounts from the merchants to help stretch the $$. CLK rotary helped by providing $500 of Club funds matched with a District grant of $500. We also had 6 Rotarians help with the sorting of the gifts – a necessary task prior to distribution.

A plethora of questions resulted with Sheriff Lahti responding to each. He is very confident no needy children have been missed. He stressed the program is not about the parents or their lifestyle , but is focused upon providing children with Christmas gifts. He said it is common for a family to work their way out of whatever their problem is. Once that happens the children are removed from the list and replaced with others.

The Sheriff department is the focal point, however the entire Keweenaw community participates by conducting fund raisers, submitting names, providing gifts via donation or donating money.

President Jim Lowell states CLK Rotary has budgeted $500 towards this program with additional donations from Rotarians adding another $100!! If each Rotarian donated $20 to the cause, we could get closer to matching last year’s total donation of $1000! Checks should be payable to CLK Rotary .

We also need to continue supporting the project with Rotarians able to help sort the gifts. If you can give of your time, please contact Jim Lowell.

CLK Rotary Business Meeting Nov 4, 2009

Monthly Business meeting with 17 members and guests attending. Guests included Dave 7 Linda Grahek, Bob Sharkey – Ass’t district Gov, and Jeff Slivkoff – guest of Andy Murtagh (gone missing!)

Jim Lowry announced the kickoff of the Copper Country United Way campaign and distributed literature for members to read. Several Happy dollars were paid as well.

President Jim began the business meeting by announcing his notes and agenda were still at home on his computer! He apologized ( with several comments from members about the need to pay up!) and continued a capella; making the following observations:

Club attendance for Oct was 57% - We can do better!!! We need to see our members at the meetings! Members with perfect attendance and members with birthdays were not announced – they will be at the next meeting.

The Financial Report was not available however the updated Budget was presented for members review.

President Jim reviewed the CHOICES program. CLK Rotary is providing trained Rotarians to present the CHOICES program to the CLK and LL/Hubbell Schools. Our Rotary volunteers are Keith Stengel, Tom TIkkanen, Jim Lowell and Kevin Store. We could sure use another 3-4 Rotarians to help present the program. Contact Jim Lowell for more info.

Upcoming programs: Nov 11 = Emily Fiala – Habitat for Humanity. Nov 18 – could not recall who the program was.

Our CLK Rotary Board has pre-approved a number of individuals for membership. We (all of us) need to contact those folks and invite them to lunch! We need to increase our membership.

An active discussion focused upon our practice of fines. Several opinions were expressed – some supporting eliminating fines and others supporting fines - either spontaneous or well-defined. The matter was referred back to the Board.

Our continued support of the Keweenaw County Sheriff Dept Secret Santa program has grown! In addition to the budgeted amount of $500, members have contributed at least another $200 with more contributions coming in – even while the discussion was going on!

We ended with the monthly 50/50 raffle - - Tom Liljegren was the lucky Rotarian!
