Breaking News

Breaking news

Unless you’ve been away, you are probably aware of the Concept 2 North American Rowing Challenge from March 15 to April 15. The competition North America wide featured over 3 thousand rowers from 103 competing clubs. Keewenaw Memorial Fitness Center Director Terry Smythe. who was our local organizer, was overwhelmed by the intensity and focus of the rowers.

Locally, the Keweenaw Memorial Fitness Center in Laurium and Houghton featured rowing teams from the CLK, Hancock, and Houghton Rotary Clubs, Michigan Tech, many High schools, and other groups. The 371 individual rowers from the KMFC crew rowed a record breaking 37,831,701 meters (23,644.8 miles).

The CLK Rotary is proud to announce that its team rowed a total 2,058,805 meters, the top team of the KMFC. Congratulations to all CLK Rotary rowers for their amazing accomplishment (heretofore to be pronounced “CLK Row-tary” courtesy of Ass't. District Governor Ron Helman)

A special award was given the Babette Jokela Tikkanen of the CLK Rotary for her individual accomplishment as the top rower in the KMFC and third in the entire North American Challenge.

We will post pictures which we taken at the banquet as soon as they are available.

CLK Rotary Club News

Welcome

For an opening picture on this first blog, I thought nothing would be more appropriate than a picture of District Governor Sue Morris and CLK President Dan Dalquist with the most recent recipients of a Paul Harris Fellowship, Andy Murtaugh and Joe Enrietti.

This blog is an experiment to see if CLK Rotary can create at minimum a weekly blog with occasional "breaking news" added when necessary. Although Don Kilpela is presently the writer, anyone who wishes can get into the blog can add items as well. Check with Captain K for details.

Coming Event
Next up on our calendar is the highway trash pickup scheduled for 9 a.m. on Saturday, April 28. Volunteers will meet at the corner of US-41 and State Highway 203 at which time we will decide who goes where. We will need a good picture of the the volunteers to put on this blog for all to see.

Wednesday, April 25, meeting
Describing the National Meeting of Main Streets, USA, in Seattle, as a cross between a political convention and a religious revival, Tom Tikkanen gave a motivating presentation on the state of Main Street Calumet. He made special mention of the work of the design committee and it's chairman, Lorri Oikarinen, who in April was named "Volunteer of the year." Tom also talked about meeting other, similar-sized Main Streets across the country, organizations with the same problems facing Calumet. He closed with a run down of the summer programs which they sponsor starting with PastyFest 2007 June 29-July 4. Main Street Calumet has an excellent web site which should be of vital interest to everyone in our area. It is www.mainstreetcalumet.com. Check it out.
