Business Meeting, July 11, 2007

(President Eva conducting her first meeting. Jim Lowell was not sleeping.)

Having received the presidential gavel on July 1, new president Eva Szilalyi conducts her first meeting. It was a seamless transition and everything went according to tradition. Attending were 22 members and 3 guests. The guests were Lillia Szilalyi, Eva's daughter, Heather Pasich, and Dorothy Rouhonen, Jay's wife.

First order of business was to introduce the proposed membership of Kathy Johnson.

Members were reminded to start selling Tammies' tickets in earnest. Before we know it, the event will be upon us. So Eva asked everyone to get cracking and SELL!! Jim Lowell reminded everyone that volunteer ushers are always needed and welcome. If you decide to volunteer as an usher, you will be required to attend an orientation meeting at some point. Remember, the Tammies is our major fund raiser. Without success, we could never assist our community as much as we do.

Volunteers were sought for guards for the Great Deer Chase for as you know safety for the cyclists is paramount as they wend their way through Calumet. It is a short gig on the morning of August 18. Sign up next week if possible.

Finally, several volunteers signed up to assist in the Copperman Triathelon on August 4th. If you haven't already signed up and wish to, please do so next week. Our team of Tom T. (Swimming), Dan D. (Cycling), and Ed Y. (running) have guaranteed they will defeat all Rotary clubs entering. "We did it before, we can do it again," is their theme.

Upcoming events:

August 4: Copperman Triathelon in Copper Harbor

August 18: The Tamburitizans at the Calumet Theatre, 7:30 p.m.

August 18: The Great Deer Chase bicycle race. Swedetown Hill. Morning.

PastyFest 2007

Upon arriving at PastyFest, I was struck by the enormous line stretching halfway across Agassiz Park. It was a line for one of the 500 free pasties donated by Charlie Hopper's Pasty Central.

Charlie walked up and down the line greeting everyone in line personally, a daunting chore appreciated by the friendly people in line.

Though it was pleasant and sunny, with the temperature in the sixties, the damand for ice cream was significantly lower. Moreover, the brisk Northeast breeze didn't help increase the demand. In fact, at the beginning, the CLK Rotary sold more coffee than either pop or ice cream. The slow sales did leave some time early on for conversations and camaraderie. However, while sales at the CLK Rotary station could have better, one couldn't ask for a better turnout and overall success of PastyFest. CLK Rotarian Tom Tikkanen and his staff, who worked so hard to present a great event, can certainly rest proud for the 2007 PastFest. What with the Fireman's Tournament across town, it was a wonder the park was so full of people.
Unfortunately, your editor's camera failed early on so the pictures are sparse. Here's when it failed, Tom...

Regular Meeting, June 27. 2007

Richard Schaefer provided the guest speaker for our luncheon. She is Jenifer Maki, Marketing Manager of the Keweenaw Mountain Lodge. Jenifer gave members an interesting and informative update on the new 7000 square foot expansion of the lodge, an expansion financed in part by a Rural Development grant from the Department of Agriculture. She pointed out that at present there is enormous interest in the new conference facility from those planning weddings and reunions but also that there is an effort being expended toward eventually securing conferences and trade shows as well. After the presentation, Jenifer stayed for a long while answering questions. Thanks to Jenifer and Dick for this interesting program.

(Outgoing Assistant Governor Ron Helman listening intently to Ms. Maki's presentation.)

Attendance: 17 Members present, 6 guests. The guests in addition to Jenifer Maki were Kathy Johnson, Assistant Governor Ron Helman, Houghton Rotary President and incoming Assistant Governor, Bob Sharkey, Kathy Johnson, and Dave and Linda Grahek.

Upcoming Event: A sign-up sheet was passed around to garner names of workers for PastyFest on Saturday, June 30. It appears that we will have adequate staffing for the refreshment booth including setting it up and cleaning afterward. See you Saturday!

On June 30, after a successful (and probably a little stressful) 3-year term, Assistant Governor Ron Helman of the Houghton Rotary will retire. He will be replaced by Assistant Governor Elect Bob Sharkey, who is presently the president of Houghton Rotary. Speaking for all our members, it has been a pleasure working with Ron. He is and always will be a dedicated Rotarian .

(Two departing Rotary officers: Dan and Ron.)

Finally, we come to the end of another fiscal year and the traditional changing of the guard at CLK Rotary. Dan will be succeeded by President-elect Eva. Dan has served the club well. His calm fortitude through the difficult decision to change meeting venues was greatly appreciated. Fortunately, he will remain on the Board of Directors for at least another year and as Past-president will be available to assist President-elect Eva.

Other officers for the 2007-08 year are: Kevin, Vice President, Ethan, Secretary, and Patsy, Treasurer for Life.

Please Note: There is no meeting on July 4th

(President Dan passing the gavel to President-Elect Eva)
See you next "year."

Not much to report on this meeting as I was away. President Dan said that there were approximately 20 members in attendance plus one guest, Josh Loukus, of REL Inc.

Ouyr speaker Josh Loukus of REL, Inc. According to Dan, Josh gave a very interesting presentation on REL Machine's business including developing & manfacturing brakes & wheels for the aftermarket motorcycle business. Moreover, REL developed and manufactures special parts for NASA and the Space Shuttle.

See you on Wednesday.

Special Report

Tom and Sue Scanlan sent some picturers from the island of Barbados where they recently spent some time. They were at the Crane Beach Resort, a fantasic spot and one of the most beautiful areas of Barbados. The Crane is perched atop a cliff overlooking the Atlantic Ocean on the windward side of the island.

Barbados is the easternmost island of the West Indies. Probably first visited by the Portuguese, the island was settled by the British in the early 1600s, became a separate colony in 1885, and gained full independence in 1966. Bridgetown is the capital and the largest city. Population: 280,000.

The language is English and is spoken in a beautifully soft lilt. Locals are called "Barbadians." When I was there in 1981, I heard locals described as "Bajans," but since I was uncertain whether or not this was a complimentary term, I never used it. For my money, it's the place to spend a vacation along with Martinique and Bonaire.

Regular Meeting, June 13, 2007

(Picture: It was nice to be able to welcome Dave and Linda Grahek back to the Keweenaw for the summer. Dave reminds us that the famous Chip Drop contest
sponsored by their rotary club in Breckenridge, Michigan, will be held again on July 4th. Each ticket costs $5.00. Dave will have them at the next several meetings. More on the prizes later. Apologies for the quality of the picture. I am not competent with digital cameras…yet.)

Attendance:
17 members, 6 guests: Capt. Dave Cone, Dennis Bastian, Dorothy Rouhonen, Lilly Szilagyi, and Dave and Linda Grahek.

Announcements: By a vote of the members in attendance, the July 4th meeting is cancelled.

Program: Program Chairman Phil introduced our speaker…me…and I presented a little slide show of our shipping experience in Curacao and Bonaire in the Netherlands Antilles. Lots of questions followed and, frankly, I had a great time unburdening myself of this memory that shaped so much of my later adult life. After the meeting, I took Andy's advice and want to report that the pencils and cup brought in a handsome $3.25 until I was kicked off the street by the cop for not having a vendor's license.

Upcoming Events:

June 30: PastyFest concession stand. A sign-up sheet will be distributed soon.

August 18: The Tammies. Let’s fill that house.

Program Chairman, June 20:
President Dan Dalquist.

(ps. Thanks for the "comment" Tom.)
